If you're just starting, then yes, go for the Chaos Marines. It's a better start than normal Marines (yes, how boring can you get). You get shout cooler stuff when you're playing and the general qualities are more or less the same, but the aesthetic is soooooooooo much funkier (and more variable, depending on how much you want to customise).

Daemons are a hard race to get into as far as playing is concerned or indeed anything. The paint work is typically more difficult due to the lack of smooth surfaces, the troop-balance is hard to find as you don't have your own playstyle yet and you can waste a lot of time and effort trying to find it, awesome though the Chaos Daemons may be. Chaos Marines are much more solid in this regard. Also, the Chaos Daemons were effectively nerfed when the new SM codex came out (and even more nerfed when the Grey Knights got released). Granted, modelling is easier, but you end up with a samey look across your hordes.

What would be best of all is buying the full packs of Chaos Marines and a small number of Daemons. Why? The horns, claws and spikey stuff make for brilliant accessories for your Marines.

Have fun, your soul now belongs to Cegorach (for he steals all and Laughs at all)!

Damnit... double post.

Right, may as well use the post space.

With the Chaos Space Marines, the key (and best thing from a hobbying perspective) is the almost extreme amount of customisation you can do with them, even with just the base plastics (though at last GW is releasing the MasterCrafted range, I think that's what it's called). And that's sort of what you're going for with them: individuality (and a good healthy/evil unhealthy depending on POV dose of psychosis).

The Daemons just look mad from the off and they're much harder to model (as far as new weapons, extra trophies etc. are concerned).

As for the actual playstyle, with Daemons, you take a risk that beginners shouldn't need to take (starting force on the table) and with the rest Deep Striking, you can end up being too cautious. The Space Marines can (with Drop Pods) do the same thing, only better. The CSM don't get this problem, it's just boots on the ground, yelling profanities and shooting bolts. The Troops choices are much more newby friendly and proxying is much easier (i.e. more viable - CSM/any other troops choice except Berserkers, CSM/Chosen, Terminators/Oblits, Daemon Prince/Greater Daemon sort of), but there's enough variation among the army list to keep you wondering.

thanks for the post and the advice, ive played dawn of war and i just loved the way the chaos marines were, not caring if they died as long as they spilled more blood for khorne or gaining skulls for the skull throne and i really like the backstory (horus heresy etc.) if i were to get into the actual gaming side of warhammer, is it hard to get into?

That's the weird thing... you start caring about your 25mm models when the bullets start flying (regardless of faction). Anyway, I think you'll be OK, because HH is quite hardcore and most of its readers are tabletop-gamers already.

Now, the rulebook is quite chunky, though about two thirds of it is fluff. They're quite easy to understand and remember (easier than for WHF, the fantasy system), though the codex intricacies can take some time to pick up. A few of the vehicle (embarking/disembarking) rules, I still sometimes forget, so it's nothing big not knowing the full set of rules. Once you find people to play with, you're away. Most gamers are very receptive of new players, and they'll walk you through the rules as you play. Hell, I didn't learn what 'rapid fire' was until my first proper battle (and it was, bizarrely, an Apocalypse battle).

Still, welcome to the hobby, prepare to say goodbye to your life savings! (Yeah, it is an expensive hobby, just to let you know what you're getting yourself into.)
