I've been looking for a new series of novels to throw myself into for a while now, and when I realized that there were some 40k novels out I decided to go with that. I went to the bookstore last night and was completely overwhelmed. There were roughly 30 novels on that case with a Warhammer 40,000 label, and I had absolutely no idea where I should start because I have a very limited knowledge on the 40k universe.

So I was hoping someone could give me some tips as to maybe a good starting point for this incredible collection of novels. I was thinking maybe the Horus Heresy novels would be a good place to start, any opinions?

Anything by Dan Abnett really, he's in my opinion by far the best WH40k writer. Especially the Eisenhorn omnibus is worth a read.

I have the Blood Ravens omnibus, it takes ages to read but its very good and blood ravens are always a good starting point.

I thought the Gaunt's ghosts novels by Dan Abnett were really easy to get into.

Gaunts Ghosts Is probably one of the best.

If you want to learn about the setting of the Imperium read the Horus Heresy, All different authors, some are a little harder to get into. But well worth the read.

Most 40k Space marine chapters have a Omnibus or if you like a soecific race there are books too.

Go to Amazon or something and get a reading list, just scroll down any Black Library book and you will see user reading lists.

Personally I havn't read any of the 40k novels except for the Ciaphas Cain series, but I have a brother whos read almost all of them. From what I've heard from I would say that Eisenhorn, the Horus Heresy and basically anything by Dan Abnett is a pretty good bet.

As said before, Gaunt's Ghosts are one of the best 40k novels there. Also, try out the Eisenhorn trilogy; read the Ravenor ones after Eisenhorn.

Deus Encarmine and Deus Sanguinis were also good books.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go with the Horus Heresy and Eisenhorn for now. I'll probably pick up the Ultramarines and Blood Ravens Omnibus down the line too.
