A friend of mine wanted to get rid of them, so he gave me all his 2nd edition Warhammer 40k miniatures, but no rulebook. So, two questions. Does anybody know if there is a free/cheap way of getting Second Edition rules (legally!!!) or if the miniatures would work with 5th edition rules (this isn't prefered given the cost, but I like warhammer 40k enough I may overcome my cheap tendencies). Thanks in advance.

sell the warhammer. the rules are so hard and fiddly i promise you will spend the best part of a week learning them even if you do get the book.

I simply keep a copy of the rulebook with my Tau Codex so I can have a look as a reference whenever I play. I don't really play often anyway though.

Anyway, OP: I just have to say one thing. Ebay. Or you can search on Google, someone's probably put Warhammer rules somewhere there...

Yes, you can use 2nd Ed. models with 5th Ed. rules without much problem. Just be prepared for swarms of small children who either think you're some kind of god for having old models, or some kind of cheapass who won;t buy THE LATEST models.

The game's fun enough though, and some stores allow the beating of kids that piss you off too much, so it's not that bad.

You can use the old models in the new edition, I'm using third edition models myself.

Why the hell would the miniatures not be compatible with the current rules? It's a lump of plastic or lead that represents a given unit. Clearly you are not familiar with the "this mug of tea represents my dreadnaught" style of play.
Might have a problem with tournaments though, I've heard they can get a bit strict on the minis representing exactly what they are ment to be.

The more recent rulebooks supersede the older ones, simply use 5th edition and make sure you both agree on what the models are.

I played that a couple of times.

The teapot was a Warhound, and a lump of cheese was a Greater Demon of Nurgle.

Yummy.

I love learning stupid, incredibly obtuse rules. And these aren't that bad from what I've heard.

Don't care about tournaments, but this mug of tea=dreadnought rule sounds great, because I swear that my family must have 50 mugs.

I think I have a few rulebooks lying around here, unfortunately I don't play because of the ridiculous prices on the models.

I did prefer it over the 4th (I think) edition ones. It was too stripped down and lost its charm of having cool special rules, especially vehicle damage and the like.

Not suprising. I keep reading about all the awesome rules they kept taking out, including the awesome madboyz rule.
