Yeah I recalled y'all's discussion on this thread and immediately updated my drivers after I stopped playing. Hopefully it'll solve things when I get to play again later.
What graphics card do you have? It's a pretty demanding game given the massive numbers of enemies on-screen at once.

A RX 6600, paired with a Ryzen 5 5600. Hardly a powerhouse, but I would have thought more than capable of running this game at lowest settings at 1080p.

Yeah, that should be fine.

I play with a 5700xt, which is a slightly better card than the RX6600, but only by about 15%, and I have a worse CPU (Ryzen 5 3600x).

With FSR on I get a pretty solid 60fps at medium settings at 1440p.

If you aren't using FSR I would recommend playing around with it. It's not as good as DLSS, but it'll give you a significant framerate boost.

Hmmm no FSR was on. That gives me some hope though that it was the driver issues impacting performance, thanks.

Think I can do 1440p60 with a 3900XT and a 3080/12GB?

The Emperor Protects.

Beat the campaign I did not finish the first game so the surprise was lost on me until I looked it up. Over all game was hype and delivered in my opinion exactly what 3rd person 40K game should bring. Currently running the operations and that is the bread and butter might dip into PVP but PVE is my jam and seeing our customized kick ass brings joy to the Emperor.

I have my grumps the parry is both generous and lacking there is no in between in my experience. At times you move like new GoW but the enemies move at a speed of a 3rd gen hack and slash. I want my bolt guns to have some punch I know its lore accurate enough but plasma especially melta just clears. Don''t nerf the other two just give bolt some love.

Overall great time and might give it more love with the PVE now that I am leveling and seeing all that come together.

Yeah a 3080 should more than handle this game at 1440p.

What class are you playing for the PvE?

It's also weird in general that they chose what most people regard to be the least interesting and fun Chaos faction. I mean, kudos to them for even trying.
There are limitations: Slaanesh is likely to be a trickier sell for computer games due to sex and nudity issues, so I suspect a lot of devs steer clear.

Yeah even with the driver update, the game isn't doing too well. I just did the mission with the flamethrower, and hoooo boy was my FPS tanking. I'm worried about how I could possibly finish this game when in the earliest levels I keep dying once too many enemies are on screen. Maybe I should limit my FPS to 30...

If I can get a steady 60fps with my hardware at 1440p and medium settings in this game you should be able to do that no problem at 1080p.

Try setting FSR to dynamic, and set the target fps to 60.

Yup, just did this earlier and for some reason, dynamic FSR at target 60 FPS performs insanely better than just selecting the "best performance" mode. Frames still drop at big moments, but still a lot smoother (and better looking) than what I was experiencing before.

I feel a little silly bouncing between here and the Currently Playing thread, but whatever.

I finally finished the game. I know a very common complaint is that Chaos is less interesting to fight than the Tyranids, but... Yeah, I way prefer fighting them. The Tyranids aren't harder per se, but the performance hit they bring and especially the visual mess they create makes them incredibly unfun to fight. How can one parry a Tyranid Warrior when the FSR blurs everything so much that I feel like I'm not wearing glasses?

Anyway, my overall thoughts of the campaign:
  1. Gameplay - For the campaign at least, it's fascinating how Saber seemed to have purposefully just replicated what SM1 offered. Gunplay has been massively improved over SM1, but still feels relatively useless against the masses of Tyranids just like they did for the Orks. I feel like the Thunder Hammer and Jump Pack are steps down from SM1, but they still completely trivialize combat. The same can be said of the Melta Weapons. They're not as versatile as in SM1, but they feel practically essential for most boss battles. They even have the "Titus is falling and you have to dodge debris" bit that feels EXTREMELY 7th gen of gaming. Obviously, if I had to choose, I would much rather play Space Marine 2. But one wonders why Saber decided to play it so safe with the campaign when the PVE and PVP sections have the game have a lot of new stuff to offer.
  2. Characters - I really miss Mark Strong as Titus. The voice actor for Titus still does a great job, but he comes off less as a noble Ultramarine leader and more of as just a grunt. Chairon and Gadriel are so much better than the companions you had in SM1, but I do wish they had been characterized more. You vaguely understand that Chairon is a chill dude and Gadriel is the by-the-books guy, but if it weren't for the red helmet and the subtitles, you'd be hard pressed to tell who is speaking sometimes.
  3. Story - Definitely the weakest part of the game. Neither Tyranids nor Chaos are compelling, and the tensions between Titus and his chapter don't really impact the story. When Titus begins to get over his post-Deathwatch depression, it becomes more interesting, but I do wish they had done more with it. The finale felt really silly with random MacGuffins all over the place. It was a treat to see the Necron tomb world and their technology used to quell Chaos, which is very relatable to overarching 40K plot, but it was so jarring that I had to double check if I missed a cutscene or something.
Overall, it was a fun ride! I say that I am surprised by how unambitious they were with iterating on SM1, but SM1 with a modern coat of paint is still a great result. I expect to find even more fun in the PVP and PVE. I just wish I could have focused entirely on enjoying the game, but the performance issues really were that distracting.

When you are going through the mines or whatever if you look at the wall decoration/art its necron. I was actually expecting necrons to show up, instead of just being used as a McGuffin.

Nah, I meant more of the moment when the three squads are sent out to rotate the floating McGuffins. Titus and company just walked up to a Necron control panel and I had no idea where that was and how they came upon it. It was so out of place it was genuinely funny.

I'm honestly surprised how bad the performance issues are for you. Like I said, I play 1440p on an only slightly better graphics card and can hit a pretty steady 60fps at medium settings.

Have you checked your graphics card temps when you're playing? Maybe your GPU is overheating and you need to re-paste it.

No, I haven't bothered to check yet (mainly because performance was pretty okay once the Tyranids were out of the picture). I should check before I start playing Operations with friends.

When you say though that you can hit a steady 60 FPS, were there moments that you could not? When I say the performance was distracting, it was mostly in certain setpiece moments. The scene with the dreadnought had my PC struggling for some reason.

I've played through the whole campaign, all of the operations, and leveled 1 class to max level. I honestly haven't had any significantly noticeable stuttering or performance drops when playing. Actually weirdly enough the only performance issues I had with the game were texture issues during a couple of cutscenes.

Interesting. Everyone keeps claiming that the game is bottlenecked by the CPU, but I supposedly have a better CPU than you. Thanks again for the frame of reference.

Maybe your CPU is being held back from its full performance.

Have you made sure you have EXPO and precision boost overdrive enabled in your BIOS?

Is your CPU getting thermal limited while playing the game? Maybe it needs better cooling.
