Warhammer 40K Spacehulk: Deathwing FPS Revealed

How often can you mine the same vein? Space Hulk, Space marine, Dawn of war. All have become rather bleh to me.

Give me a Squad Based X-com rip-off set in Necromunda where you play some clanner scum..
A RPG were you play an Inquisitor Inquisitoring the warp out of a hive.
A Privateer Styled "Rogue Trader" game were you explore unexplored regions of space and loot it.

So many more options than just blasting orks and then chaos again.

Screw Space Hulk, what i'd like to see is an Dragon Age:Origins style RPG set in the 40k Universe made by a pre-EA bioware! seeing as thats a pipe-dream i'd settle for pretty much any 40k RPG....

What do you guys think of this? The Space Hulk game out right now kinda sucks, even if it is a direct adaptation of the Sin of Damnation campaign. This is apparently going to be an all out FPS title. The last time Warhammer 40K tried this, we got the godawful Fire Warrior. But the developer behind it gives me hope that it will be pretty decent.

Now, if only Relic would announce Dawn of War 3 already...

Can someone explain why the recent Space Hulk game has been getting so much hate? I don't understand some of the arguments I think people are deploying in response to this.

Also, yes please to DoW III.

It's a 30 dollar game that looks like crap, it poorly optimized, and has barely any ingame music or settings customization.

I played Bastion for 15$ and had a great experience. This looks like shite.

In their defence, the recent Relic games have had much better voice acting for the Chaos boyz boys - Eliphas and Araghast from DoW II: Chaos Rising were great Khornate/Undivided characters, Ulkair was a right proper Great Unclean One in personality and Kyras of Retribution pulled off the 'Khornate but intelligent' thing really well. Nemeroth from Space Marine was also a pretty solid Undivided Chaos Sorceror in both writing and VA, so they've definitely gone off the 'CHAOS ARE ALL KHORNATE AND SHOUTY AND OVER THE TOP BECAUSE THEY'RE EEEEEEVIIIIILLLLLL' vibe from DoW.

And, to be fair, I'm pretty sure Relic didn't do the writing of Soulstorm - it was mostly done by Iron Lore, who ended up closing the year after Soulstorm released. Gabriel Angelos' writing proves this - he's been pretty damn solid in all presentations throughout Relic's games, which is great due to how awesome he is.

Fair points. I haven't ran through the DOW2 campaigns in a while (obviously too long) due to annoyance with GFWL and the lack of guardsmen. Also I'm usually offline and I only really enjoy it with a partner.

I just feel we're a long way from being able to get games focusing on some of the nastier 40k factions(yes ALL 40k factions are nasty, you know what I mean.) Hopefully GW will at least try and branch out a bit.

Well, in the case of Fire Warrior, it didn't help that it was developed by Kuju Entertainment. A dev team responsible for Microsoft Train Simulator and Singstar and... well, nothing else before Fire Warrior. And even afterward, they haven't made much else worth noting. =P

Dude, Microsoft Train simulator is, like, the best game ever. Don't diss it, man.

Oh, I'm not. Honestly, I'm actually one of those weirdos who loves train sims in a non-ironic way. It's just... you see what I mean about handing an FPS over to a developer with no proper FPS-game experience, right? That just isn't a good plan.

It would be like handing over the next Zelda game to someone like Treyarch. It wouldn't end well at all.

Omg. Tau has always been my favorite race, but I never played Fire Warrior because it was panned so heavily. I just went up to youtube and looked at some videos of it and I think people are being too nice by calling it "godawful". I've seen mods from 6+ years ago leagues better than that. Wow.

From what I remember (it's been years since I played it) it was an OK as an FPS, but as a 40k game it was awful. That's the impression that's been left, though I'm not sure if I want to play it again just to confirm that.

Yeah, that was pretty much how it went, it started with a lone fire warrior killing his way through a Space Marine strike cruiser and just got more ridiculous from there.

Had some good points though, at least it understood what a Bolter was and how it should look and handle. And the chaos bolter had a really creepy gunshot sound, I really disliked having to use it.

Didn't play it past the second level(?), i think, only played it at a friends.

I'm all for another WH40K shooter. Big time WH40K fan that I am. But this studio.........

EYE was a great game. It was fun, pretty cool, like an extreme hipster Deus Ex. But it had some of the FUNKIEST ( putting it lightly here ) UI and game mechanics I have ever seen. The guys at Streum are....well, pretty damn eccentric from what i've seen while playing EYE.

It'll probably turn out pretty good. But I won't be surprised if some hilariously bad UI and game mechanic decisions are made.

In all fairness if they're trying to capture a more isolated horror vibe it'll be quite hard to make the game feel that way, especially when your character is clad in massive power armour with the ability to use psychic powers whilst wielding a weapon that fires explosive shells at a tremendous rate of fire, but I don't know, that's just me.

Lore-wise, Terminator armor is literally tissue paper to a gene-stealer. It goes through it like a knife through better, and this is their HEAVIEST armor. Theres nothing quite like trudging through cramped confines encumbered in heavy armor with the knowledge that it is pretty much useless against genestealers, all the while your significantly agile foe skitters and outmaneuvers you. Pretty stirring stuff imo.

Keep in mind that the overall ridiculously overpowered setting of the WH40K universe makes their explosive shell guns pretty darn basic, Genestealers will take quite a beating before going down and a Broodlord will most likely just get mad.

Its kind of like pitching a sun going super-nova into a black hole.

It depends where you get your lore from.
I believe that the Codex does agree with you, but from what I've read in the novels (my only experience of Warhammer 40K is the novels) while the Genstealer's claws are very powerful it would at least take them a minute or two to get through terminator armor.

Thinking about it though, the Codex's are probably more consistent so they're probably the more reliable source.

I hope this turns out alright. I quite enjoyed the space hulk game from the 90s, it had a few things I wish were better (such as the close combat, it was a bit slow like your marine was fighting in water) but overall it was good.

bit sad to see everyone giving fire warrior the thumbs down. I didn't think it was so bad, yeah the graphics were poor but it had some nice features.

Space marine was a game I really enjoyed, hands up anyone who completed all the waves in exterminatus! (waves hands!)
Saying that, the game didn't live up to the trailer which contained a Titan and tyranids. What happend to them?

A space hulk dosent sound the most interesting of setting for a fps but having thought about it, and if they add enough interactive details to the hallways and rooms, then it could work.
I doubt the creators would use just gene stealers as the 90s space hulk had chaos marines in it.
My imagination is going off a bit now but I feel that their is a lot you could do with a space hulk, after all most hulks have been lost in the warp for thousands of years, who knows where it's been or seen or taken on board?

It wasn't a very good FPS at all. What kind of game forces you to keep one weapon in your inventory at all times, even if it doesn't have any ammo, and there are no ammo refills for it in the entire level? The Pulse Rifle is one of the deadliest anti infantry weapons in the 40K universe, but you're not likely to find many power cells for it among Imperial outposts.

One thing the game did have in its favor was some great voice acting. Sean Pertwee is always great (he was Governor Severus in Fire Warrior, and Radec and Hakha in Killzone).

It's been years since I played it, and I didn't play it that long. Certainly not long enough to remember mechanics issues. I've actually been considering playing it again, but a part of me baulks paying money for it.

Anyway, I think I've wandered this a little off topic. So back on topic, more 40k games is a good thing, and Space Marine games without Ultramarines or Blood ravens is a definitely a plus.
