Hey all, just a quick question for today, I have been thinking about heading down to games workshop and picking up some of the Warhammer models to paint and bask in their awesomeness.

About how much money am I looking at spending for a couple of decent model sets, paints, brushes, and other misc stuff.

And I am wondering if any of you out there have done model painting before and had any tips for me.

Any input would be much appreciated, cheers all :)

Your average box of troops is £18 last time I checked. It's about £2.50 per brush but they're very good quality. I believe it's also £2.50-ish for each individual paint pot. You can also buy a pain starter kit for about £25. As a basecoat for your models they also sell spray paint canisters of black or white as regualr paint doesn't work well, those are about £10 if I remember correctly.

Or there's the "Mega Paint Set" which is about £200 but it has every paint, ink, brush and more that's available.

I'd reccomend checking the Games Workshop website though, mate.

All prices are estimates as I haven't bought anything in over a year due to me buying the Mega Paint Set which will have you set for bloody ages.

Oh well I stopped playing a few years ago and I spent round about £30 at the start but when I sorted out what colour scheme I wanted I had to buy alot more depending on what army and what colour scheme you want but if I was you, I buy a starter pack.

It also depends how anal you get about your model'l appearance. Some people are fine with a basic paint coat and others, like me, want every model to look perfect.

effectively, you'r looking to spend getting on for £30, once you fator in the models, the brushes, paints and assembly tools (clippers, glue files etc.)
unfortunatly it's not a cheap hobby

may i also recommend Tau Fire Warriors as a good first paint. they have some interesting shapes to them, and they look pretty cool too. i'd also recccomend the Eldar Wraithlord, as they look badass

you should totally buy a load of sets and build an awesome hero (The fantasy warhammer empire parts are all interchangeable now, as are most of the SPESS MEHREENS parts)

when i used to play 40k i found the citidel paints were pants, but then i found that Tamiya paints from my local model shop were so much better and cheaper as well. i also bought my brushes from the local art shop. bit more expensive but they lasted a hell of a lot longer.

Ok, Ok, first off, DO NOT BUY the GW paint brushes, primer, etc. You can get all that for MUCH cheaper at places like Lowes, Michael's, anywhere else really. Only thing you NEED to buy from them are their AWESOME overpriced models and paint!

So for building, all you really need to knowis don't glue everything together at first. For Marines and the like, don't glue on the bolters/weapons on first. you can build thw whole body, but leave the weapons off, so you can paint the chests. Next you prime the models, everything. You can get cheap spray primer from Lowes for like $0.98 per can. Works great on plastics and metals, and costs 1/15th the cost of GW primer!

Next, after spraying them all and letting them dry for like an hour, you can move on to painting. Like I said, do NOT buy GW brushes, you can get just as good, if not better brushes for like a dollar a pop at craft stores, like Michael's and such. Only advice, thin your paints. Make them as viscous as milk. Many thinner coats are better than one thick coat. Also, you should paint the lighter colors firts, and then go over with the darker ones, WHEN THE PAINT DRIES!

That's pretty much it. You'll need to chose a color scheme, and such, like I have here a picture of my Raven Guard. My brother gave me these custom plastic models for our birthday! They're Vanguard Vets!

The pictures of my Raven Guard Vanguard Veterans! Shrike's own "wing"! :p

Hope this helped! ^_^! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I haven't done Warhammer for ages, but all I know is that if you buy all your stuff from there you'll be overcharged. Take these people's advice, it all seems pretty sound. Have fun slaving away over your models.

Okay most has been said already by now. Best to buy cheap mat black paint sprays somewhere else. For me, I have a lack of good local craft shops, so I end up buying the paints and brushes from GW. It's best to shop around your area first to make sure you're not paying the high price of GW stuff you could be getting cheaper elsewhere. However, the GW stuff isn't bad, I have to admit it's one of the places where it's expensive because it's actually good.
The models will set you back a hell of a lot, but don't buy scenery and basing materials from there if you're going to be doing scenic bases, you can get stuff like that from modelling stores for much much less and in larger quantities.

I'm one of those incredibly fussy people, and I end up having to have every model up to the particular standard I set. I can get some pictures if anyone is interested. XD

In general, do shop around for materials and paints first, but don't feel bad buying the GW stuff, it's good quality.

I wouldn't if I were you, I used to paint it and while it was a fun and rewarding hobby, Games-Workshop Constantly rapes your wallet, and the game blatantly favors the players who have more money to spend.

the models are "overpriced" but for the most part they are pewter, the plastic ones are cheaper tho. i say go for the pewter ones, they'll look better

as for paint, yeah stick with the gw paint, it's a better than the cheaper stuff.

as for brushes, well a brush is a brush, go to a craft store and get one there, you will want several brushes

depends on where you live how much you'll pay, but i'd say for everything it would be around $100 or so to get everything
