I need something new to read right now and I've decide to take the Warhammer plunge. From what I've seen there are lots of books in a few different series so I need suggestions on where to start.

Ciaphas Cain is very, very entertaining. I definitely recommend the first three, and I'm having a lot of fun reading the fourth.

Don't read Abnett, thank me later. First and Only and Necropolis excepted for 40k, and Riders of the Dead for fantasy excepted. His stuff gets very cliched and samey.

Generally, the books were better when they were written by known authors, not people that wrote the rules giving being a novelist a go. The franchise got to the part where they realised they could stick their logo onto anything and it'll sell.

The stuff by Jack Yeovil (better known as Kim Newman) were brilliant, most of Bill King's stuff was very good, likewise Brian Craig (better known as Brian Stableford)

WH40K... Dan Abnett... pretty much anything by him... go, read now, thank me later...
This. Gaunt's Ghosts and Eisenhorn are among my favourite book series, and a must if you want to get into 40k's lore.

I don't really enjoy any of the other authors.
