Warhammer Terrain help

(I think this should go here I mean it is a game)
so I am buying my friends unpainted lizardman army and I was thinking I wanted to build a gaming board to go with it how hard and how expensive is it to make a gaming board starting from scratch.

The difficulty and price would vary, but a good idea for the board would be a wooden base covered with a slab of polystyrene for sculpting. I haven't played Warhammer for years though.

what kind of tools would I need to sculpt and does anyone maybe have online guides, and what I want to do is like have a medium sized town maybe 5 builds surrounded by forrests with like maybe a hill off to the right.

Go on some die-hard Warhammer fan-forums or simply go to the Gamesworkshop site. Or you can ask the usergroup, by tracking them down via the Community section.

Think to remember with terrain is that your models have to move through it. If the models keep falling over or cant be placed easily in the terrain you will not be as useful.

I sculpt most of my terrain from polystyrene packing found in electrical goods (but play 40K so different setting).

what I Was thinking was keeping the town fixed but using the tree that gw makes because I also kinda wanna use it as a display board so I will carve indents for bases and have alot of foliage but when it comes time to game fill in the holes and take off the foliage so it is alot easier to manuver though.
