I've been trying to start playing it, I have some friends who play and a kid at school is selling his old set, but it's so damn expensive, anyone know where I can get a cheap value on an army?

EBAY. Dear lord, every model you want is there, usally for less than half of box price. Usually you can find something painted too.

I used to play whilst I was at school, but realised I was spending ten times longer painting than I was actually battling. Plus, I was spending a huge amount of money on an army when I could get computer games that were much cheaper and lasted longer...

I play 40k as Necrons, although i admit the price hike detered me for a few months. Big problem for me is that my friend is the only other person near me who plays and im too far from the nearest GW to go to regular half-term tournaments etc...

played 40k from the rogue trader days until 2nd ed, and warhammer from 2nd ed to 4th ed. Now that some mates and I have gotten into warhammer online, we're starting to build warhammer armies. I'm doing my first khorne based chaos warrior army.

I've been wanting to get back into 40k. For some reason lately, I've been feeling the urge to make a big ol' army of Guardsmen and just see how well they work with human wave tactics. I figure if I just dump enough miniatures into the army, there's a certain lack of skill I'll be able to get by with.
Untrue Galt, take it from the horde army designed for waves... The unskilled are cut down with shocking ease, it takes an army engineered to both excel in speed and disruption to use a wave rush.

Guard can do it, but i suggest buying orks or Nids and saving yourself the pain.

Don't listen to Ultrajoe anybody- Tyranids are pathetically easy to beat for a Guard player who knows his business. Here's an apocalypse example.

I've got a three-thousand point guard army holding a section of line in an apocalypse battle against a mass of Tyranids. And I'm decimating his Gaunts- seriously, the closest any of his infantry get's is 12"(Rapid fire range- for approximately 150 lasguns). His Lictor's have been and gone- knocked out two of my lascannon teams before being swamped unto death, while the other tried to kill HSO, and got a power sword pushed through it's spine for it's troubles.

SO, to try and break the stalemate, my oppnenet Deepstrikes in his Trygon (massive tunneling super-beastie) into my lines. It scatters just inside my defensive line- not in base-to-base (mind, you can shoot at it even if it is in close-combat). So, what do I do? Do I redirect my Leman Russ and sacrifice a turn of shooting? Or should I charge it with a couple of squads and try to hold it up?

I do neither. Instead, I land(deepstrike) a squad of hardened veterans (3 meltaguns, 1 plasma pistol) and a special weapon's squad. The special weapons goes first- the demo charge scattering nicely and wiping out it's one mass point. They fire their meltaguns, which both miss (cursed Guard accuracy). Then the veteran's step up to fight. In a hailstorm of energy fire, the Trygon is reduced from 5 wounds, right back down to one. A solitary krak missile finishes the job. The Trygon screams, and crashes to the ground in a sickening medley of shattering bone and destroyed flesh.

The guardsmen smile, and resume firing.

I became quite interested In It for about a month until I relized that I was wasting a lot of money. I also didnt like going into Games Workshop. The staff there make It impossible to browse for stuff. My Auntie wont go In there for that reason alone, even though she Is interested In the hobby. Other than that I think that the fictional universe they developed for It Is really good and full of history and Is why I will buy games like dawn of war.

1) I was saying that he should leave the rushing to the Nid's, as his plan was to make a charging guard army.

2) Not to start this argument, but slap that idiot player down and spit on his face will you? The bastard does not deserve to masquerade as the hive mind...

...Trygon? Amateur.

I used to play 40K until I was old enough to want to save my money for a car.

I played as the Dark Eldar, I chose them because I thought they looked the coolest and none of my friends were playing as them.

I got back into the game in college playing instead as the Witch Hunters (that's sisters of battle to you who played Soulstorm) but again, the game is more expensive than a drug habit so I had to quit. Actually I quit because I was so angry they were 'canceling' Dark Eldar and not accepting them as a playable army in tournaments... that was a big mushroom stamp to the face for me.

I used to play a lot of tabletop games. But the people I used to play with started getting all annoying, so I stopped playing with them.

40K: Guard, Marines, Tau, Tyranids
Fantasy: Lizardmen, Empire
Blood Bowl: Humans, Chaos, Dwarves, Norse
Necromunda: Anybody
Warmachine: Cygnar, Cryx

All Hail the glory of the Hive Mind (laymen's terms: I play Tyranids as well)

I've been in the hobby for 4 years now, and I've noticed a trend. Whenever I think my army is at the size it should be, I always tend to walk past a carnifex and think "hmmmm, I could use another one in my army". Six weeks later, I've doubled the size of my army, and have to live off of ramen noodles for the rest of the month.

So what I'm saying is...Warhammer is awesome.

Joe, he was not an amauteur- I am simply incredibly experienced in the fine art of fighting off any form of assault. Hence my unnatrual love of all things short-ranged, cheap and abjectly brutal. He was something of a middling player- not bad, but simply unprepared for the sheer concentrations of malevolent, devious evil that exist in every Imperial Guard player. (it's the only way our army can possibly survive.)

Are you UK-based? We must play a battle or two at some time, once I return to Her Majesties Shores. (If the answer to the first question is 'no', then disreagrd prior statement)

And all he could afford was a Trygon. Well, he could have brought more 'Fexes instead (the wiser decision), or more infantry, but I point-blank refused to play an army with more than six Lictors. Those things are the most evil little fuckers you guys have-forget Hive Tyrants, Hierodules and Hierophants- if the Hive-Mind simply fielded nothing but Lictors and Gaunts then it would be unstoppable.

What would you have suggested instead? More Raveners? Gargoyles? A morass of winged Tyranid Warriors? Enough Gaunts to sink the Bismark?

But no-one would play you, either. Except maybe Blood Angels players and overzealous CSM.
