Chaos space marines and Space marines are the best ALL ROUNDED races.
I like chaos because i want to summon daemons fall into pits of darkness disgust and horrible delights.

But it all comes down to who you like the look on, not really who is the best to play as.

Think I'll probably go with Tau, and I'm guessing you are allowed to include Kroot in with them... Could you post some pics up of tau and kroot so I can see how painting would go?
Tau are a fantastic army (I collect them myself). Just be careful if you go against Tyranids. Before the match even started they were halfway across the board and shredded me apart. Kroots are pretty good in close range, but they're really the only Tau unit that can survive in melee.

Chaos Space Marines are pretty good as well. They're well balanced. You can either have normal Khorn Berserker with close combat weapons and ranged weapons or use demons to handle all the close-range. They also have Obliterators which can change their weapons every turn from rocket launchers to chainswords and power fists for close combat.

Couple of tecnicalities here. Khorne Beserkers don't have any ranged options other than pistols. Did you mean normal Chaos Marines with the mark of Khorne?
Also Obliterators can choose from lascannon, plasma cannons, multi-meltas, twin plasma gun, twin meltagun or flamer, Plus they have power fists for melee.

Funny story regarding Tau. Last game I played, my Orkz vs. Tau.

We outshot them. They outmeleed us.

It was rather hilarious.

OP: You want good shooting, and capable of surviving some melee? Necrons or Space Marines. Eldar can work if you stock up on Aspect Warriors.

I opted for Chaos, for the reasons that follow:
1. they look awesome
2. daemons
3. good choice of weapons (ranged & melee), vehicles, wargear
4. good armor
5. They're CHAOS!!

Yeah, I meant normal Marines with Mark of Khorne and I was just giving some examples of the weapons Obliterators have. I assume a new player (no offence) would know much about Multi-meltas, Twin-linked Plasma Guns or Lascannons.

Fair enough.
