Oh boy, DC is in a world of trouble. Only way they could be moreso is if Marvel picked up the rights to some of DC's vital Justice League members.

Much as I'd love to dump on Affleck, as a Director he's been pretty good so far. Gone baby gone was better than average and The Town was very tightly directed.

Joss Whedon, his other qualities aside, was a good pick for The Avengers for two reasons:

1. He is really good at group dynamics in the action genre.

2. Every show he has created that made it past season 1 featured characters that would fit into a superhero comic. And then he made a movie of the one show that didn't make it past season 1 and turned one of the characters into a superhero.

I don't care how good a director you find, if they aren't demonstrably able to match at least the first point, they are a poor pick for a Justice League movie. Point 2 would be a nice bonus, but who the hell can match that?
Not only that, but Joss also seems to have a pretty amicable working relationship with Marvel predating his making Avengers. At the very least, he's responsible for one of the best X-Men runs in the last what? 10-15 years? I'm tempted to say 20 or more even. Astonishing was one of the best comics I've ever read. It's hard to find writers and directors with his obvious talent with the super hero genre, who've transitioned so well between TV, movies, and comics. The fact that he has done so well in all of those venues certainly proves he has the talent to do well pretty much anywhere, particularly when dealing with super heroes.

My opinion? Whoever directs it, get Brian Clevinger(Atomic Robo, 8-Bit Theater) to write the script. That way you can get at least one part of the movie the nerd cred it needs.
While I might actually enjoy that (scratch that, I would enjoy that), I think I'd rather have an Atomic Robo movie than have Clevinger stuck writing other people's characters in an attempt to ape Marvel's movie success.

I like Ben Affleck, I like him as an actor, I respect his work as a director, and he seems like a nice enough guy. But to my knowledge he's never directed scenes that would later include large amounts of CG; and planning a shot around what isn't there is a lot harder than it sounds.

In my mind this doesn't bode well.

Also Batman going to have to be rebooted to be included; Nolan's Batman has no place standing next to Superman (unless he becomes Justice Leagues' Rorschach, then again Nolan's Batman didn't do a lot of detective work so he still wouldn't fit).

So wait, Marvel gets long time awesome and universally beloved Whedon to make their continuity combining piece, and warner brothers and DC get a guy who has directing credits on 5 films and writing credits on 4.

Okay, Affleck isn't a terrible director from what I can see, but he isn't someone who made a cult classic or is particularly beloved.
