DC heroes are supposed to be ideal. An almost untouchable godlike being that no mere human can ever meet the standards of. Batman works specifically because the Gotham heroes and rogues are (like Marvel heroes) flawed in some way. These human qualities are what connect people with the characters in a way no one attempting to be Superman ever can.

...

Superman and the Green Lantern never work this way. They are DC Heroes. Those seemingly petty things we deal with every day are something that never requires even slight consideration for these characters. The answers to nearly every internal debate is always the same with no possible deviation. DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE GOOD OF THE WHOLE. DC is chalk full of statuesque idols; Not human characters one can relate to.
Odds are in favor that a lot of these IPs are going to need some serious reconstructing in terms of personality and behavior, both in plot and characters (you are not getting away with bringing back the Lex Luthor from the 80's movies/Returns, he's going to need one hell of a face lift).

As noted in an earlier post to the linked Sumperman Movie article [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.178046-More-Dark-Knight-Talent-Arrives-to-Save-Superman#5148153], these franchises are going to need a modern interpretation and adaptation to make sure they are successes along the lines of The Dark Knight, and a more violent, gritty version of those IP's may be the best way to do that.

DC has pretty much failed at making theater-released movies so far, and before anyone says something I mean in the past decade. The big successes being Watchmen and the 2 new Batman films. On the other hand most of their other media forms sell quite well.

Marvel seems to be leading the comic pack in movie terms. Hits like Iron Man, the NEW Incredible Hulk film, Fantastic Four, and the XMen series. My god, when they don't hit it out of the park they rectify the mistake within a few years.
Which means a lot more is riding on Green Lantern's success. I wonder if there is a way to make a Superman film that will work with current audiences. I mean the original Superman movies were alright, but if Returns is anything to go by, that formula is well past its expiration date.
