There was a recent article on educational games on the escapist (I can't remember who wrote it), but I thought it was interesting how it gave a different view on educational games and it helped me to remember some of the first games I played were in my school IT suite and weren't that horrific.

There was one game where your character worked on an archaeological digsite and went back in time to Roman Britain, you not only learnt about history but it was a half decent point and click rpg.

Another one an exploration-type point and click adventure where you crash land on an island and you have to find your way off. Interestingly the island has been taken over by robots and you have to get out of there asap. It's mostly logic puzzles and maths, like using maths to solve the locked door's code. I eventually completed it and found my way off with the help of a helicopter.

Another game which I played at home was "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" which was featured in the article, I remember how fun it was to chase Carmen across the world and you learnt some geography on the way.

You can even see that education stuff in new games. I think Square Enix had a great idea with the reaper Sho Minamimoto with his catch-phrase "so Zetta slow!" and the level leading up to him including math's question's but annoyingly which were solved for you.

So really educational games aren't that bad and you'll probably remember atleast one game which had an educational edge to it and wasn't too bad. The reason why Educational games get such a bad rep is they are usually developed by people who don't understand that a game also needs to entertain and be fun to play so they create a game which is a mind numbing experience.

So what's everyone's experiences with educational games? did you like them when you were a kid?

What about the magic school bus games? I learnt a bit of stuff from them.
I remember them being pretty fun too.

And it doesn't really correlate to anything I would need to learn in school (not my country's history) but I remember Oregon Trail as well.

Maths Blaster. I remember playing that in primary school, and that one was pretty good. You played a a spaceman of some sort trying to rescue your friend, and to pass each level you had to finish a bunch of math puzzles. I think there was one part where you had to pull in bit of space rubbish to fuel your spaceship, but the tractor beam was powered by addition and subtraction equations, so you'd get one right and get one pull from the beam. Another where you could only get through gates if you were holding a certain number, and you could increase or lower it by catching drips from the ceiling. People in my class went crazy for it.

Yeah, I had lower standard when I was seven.

Hmmm, I think my schooldays was before educational computer games (heh) so I haven't played them. My school only got computers for the students when I was almost out of it.

Educational games are a good thing though, if done correctly and fun to play.

The only computer 'game' i can remember was on an old macintosh called, uh, pod.
You'd type stuff like 'pod can run' and pod would run. Thinking back it was really surreal for a five year old to type 'pod can pop' and watch him die...

I remember the games mentioned by the op, or at least something very similar. The best experiences I've had with educational games are arcadey things, anyone remember typing of the dead? With the popularity of little simple games like the XBox live arcade and Newgrounds I think they could make a big impact.

I used to play "Mario Teaches Typing" at my elementary school. Looking back, it's probably one of the worst incarnations of Mario to date, but back then, it was pretty damn cool.

One of the most sneakily educational games without meaning to be so was Pirates! While I was having fun ransacking galleons, blasting the Spanish Armada, and blitzing towns and conquering them... and in the process got a serendipitous learning of Caribbean geography.

Guess it pays to know where the hang-dang those villages are before you strip them of their gold and goods, hah?

Maths Blaster, Treasure Trove Cove, and Treasure Mountain.

To this day I have not found a game that come even close to those. They were so much fun.
