Was the joker played by anyone else but Heath Ledger?

I heard rumors that Other actors had to do reshoots for Heath Ledger after he died. I have found no mention of this anywhere, but my friends are certain of it.

I mentioned the film by terry gilliam, which was shooting while he died, but they are certain it was the Dark Knight.

So I'm asking you if there's any merit to this. Were there any reshoots after Heath Ledger died for the Joker?

I thought that they had all of his major scenes done before he died and anything else was easily done by a stunt man in a wig.

I know that's what they did after Brandon Lee died during production of The Crow.

from what I understand he died after production was finished, not during

Heath Ledger's Joker is a hard act to follow (or imitate for a stand-in)

It wasn't the Dark Knight you're thinking of. I can't remember the name, but he died while filming a different movie.

I think you're thinking of a different movie. There was one where they had to re-shoot the movie starring three different actors as a way of aiding the storytelling - can't remember the name though.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there, I'm pretty sure it was the Dark Knight. Correct me if I'm wrong.

... Which leaves Jack Nicholson as the last Joker incarnate. That slasher smile is classic.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Uses Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. Damn good film, watched it a few days ago.

More accurately, Jack was Jack in clown makeup. Because much like Shatner, Heston, and Adam West, Jack Nicholson can *only* play himself.

He actually beats out those other three in that someone else has also managed to make a career out of only playing Jack Nicholson. See: Christian Slater.

And Hamill is the Joker, FYI.

No, the movie was completed before he died.

A few shots may be of stuntmen, but they were always stuntmen rather than reshoots, Dark Knight was finished and cut before Heath died.
I suspect you're thinking of the Imaginarium of Dr Parnasus, which is the one which had Ledger die during production. All of his Dark Knight filming was finished by then.

The only film Heath Ledger was actually filming when he died was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. And yes, for that they did finish the film with other actors, who each donated their fees for the film to Ledger's daughter who was accidentally left out of his will as he had forgotten to rewrite it after she was born.

As for The Dark Knight, that film was already in post-production when he died and from what I recall all of the scenes with the Joker in were finished already and were being edited into the film. No reshoots were necessary. Few reshoots are ever needed in films anyway during post-production, it's only usually done in exceptional circumstances or if the footage already shot is insufficient for the editing team to use, which as an editor I can safely say is quite rare.

Yes, there was. As I said before in this post, it was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Quite a mouthful, that name, so no wonder it's tough to remember :D.

You're thinking of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. He filmed some scenes for it before his death. All of the scenes for The Dark Knight were filmed by Heath Ledger while he was alive (naturally).

EDIT: Wow, like 5 people answered that while I was typing.

Your friends are getting Batman confused with "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", where Heath Ledger died during filming so other big name actors were called in for the same character in different scenes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Imaginarium_of_Doctor_Parnassus
Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, and Tom Waits star in the film, though Ledger's death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended.[5] Ledger's role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character Tony as he travels through a dream world.
Its interesting because since its about different imaginations for each different actor standing in for each "world", as opposed to just the one actor (Ledger) throughout the film.
