Can anyone explain to me why the polls were frozen at all? I didn't really understand that part, and I feel like I missed something.

It seemed to happen at the same time that announcement-spam Zynga did on their forums, but perhaps thats just me and my tinfoil hat talking.

Actually, Valve put an another ad out to their Steam community and the fans came running to support Valve just as Zynga's had done 48 hours before that.

Zynga was desperate to get more votes, in fact, at the time they had put a "Vote for Zynga ad" on every forum of the Zynga forums and their fans were pissed that the company was working harder to win a pointless competition rather then fixing the bugs that plauge their games (At least, thats what a few of the posters on the Zynga forums said) and actually came over and voted for Valve just so they wouldn't have to deal with the ads for another week.

It was a fair victory for Valve and the Twitter votes were almost SOLELY in valve's favor.

Nah you all got it wrong,

What really happened was that me and a bunch of mates got together and built a time machine that was powered by a nuke, a half eaten PB and J sandwhich, a copy of duke nuke'em forever and chuck norris's third testicle.

We went back in time several times to give valve the votes it needed at zero hour.

It was a battle of internet popularity and Valve won fair and square due to their community all banding together to help the only proper developer in that particular round.

But does it really matter now? Zynga has lost and now we're on the big match up. Valve vs Bioware.

I'm actually rather eager to see the outcome.

I hearby abandon all my prior theories. I now believe this one to be the most credible.

Hrm... as I recall, on Friday evening a message was posted to the Steam updates launcher thingy, which brought the Steam votes up to a tie with Zynga, until they spammed all their games again. Then on Saturday yes, Zynga was in the lead, and the polls got pre-emptively closed- I think that the first batch of twitter votes were added at that time as well, however Zynga was still ahead. Then the valve fans went all over getting more votes and it was posted on the steam news to come vote again, and Valve steadily pulled ahead. Zynga had already spammed its fanbases and forum, they'd tapped out the resources of people who would come vote and people became angry at the constant spam and came over to vote against them. Valve's fans were still fresh, many having only seen it on the news that Sunday evening, and Valve kept their lead to the end. Not to mention Zynga voters came and didnt twitter, Valve fans did twitter a LOT.

I see no conspiracy there.

Interesting theories... it did seem a little odd that Valve got al those votes in the last bit of voting time. That said it was likely because Valve fans or Zynga haters noticed that the poll was still leaning towards Zynga and time was running out.

Any thoughts? Yeah. March Mayhem is a blight on the landscape and makes me want to hit somebody. 4chan invasions, Facebook casuals, and whiny fanboy pissing contests---makes GameFAQs look civilized and intelligent by comparison.

I knew something like this would show up.

As in many things,we just can't know for sure, but in fairness,if zynga and valve were swapped around, and zynga pulled through after something like that,I would be calling hax,but that would be the mindless fanboy rage breaking through my abiility to think.

The fact that Zynga was even in the running to begin with was a stupid move on the Escapists part and I'd like to know who's idea it was to suggest that Zynga be counted among the many other well respected, and not casual videogames developers. The fact than GSC lost to Zynga just sickens me to no end. I'm so glad that Valve won and beat those annoying Facebook fucks who have no social life outside of their computer social networking sites.
These are not gamers... are they really the types of people we want associated with ourselves? Really?

What Kouen said.

Seriously, Valve won, end of. Let's not discuss this for the coming 16 years, shall we?

Apps!=games.

Zynga should not have been in the contest.

The only reason it was in there is because the escapist wanted the traffic from facebook. Its shameful really.
How ocme it's sahemfull?
Maybe some of the peopel who love mafia wars will actually catch on to what we're talking about in here generallya dn try out somehting that they think resembles it, liek GTA or saints row, and whadoyaknow, a new gamer is born.

None of us were born with knowledge of gaming, we we're intrpduced somehow, this may very well result in people trying out stuff they wouldn't have otehrwise, and mayeb they'll end up liking gameing.
