WASD vs ESDF

Hmm never even heard of or thought of using ESDF but i have no problem reaching T,G,B with my index finger while using WASD

WASD is better for me because I have extra keys on my keyboard and ESDF would put me further away from those which would be pointless for me.

Also with ESDF I have to stretch to reach my shift and ctrl keys which are two of my most used keys, I also find it easier to reach TGB with my index finger than my pinky to reach ctrl/shift.

WASD gets another vote from me.

For every game that binds crouch to "c" annoys me too. I usually remember to rebind it to left ctrl, but sometimes I forget and then wonder why I'm either doing nothing or just blown myself up

The only time I've used EDSF is when I played Tribes 2 all those years back. Hell, it doesn't bother me much, I can use both that and WASD effectively really.

I just adapt to use whatever setting the game gives me.

I'm just used to WASD. I went to my buddy's house once and we started to play Jedi Academy.

He had the movement on arrows, space as the jump, and everything else assigned to things generally on the far left. With a right-handed mouse.

FIDDLY AS FUCK.

That... makes absolutely no sense...

I just tried switching between arrows and space a few times, and I can't imagine ever being able to do that as a reflex.

He's not, actually. Haha.

He moved to our town from Cyprus a few months back and we became fast friends. He's a massive Star Wars fanboy and plays a bunch of videogames. He also enjoys rock music and Family Guy.

But no, my typing position isn't WASD, but I can type at >100 WPM, so I don't really need to refine my technique or anything.

What i'm saying is that when you type, where do you finger lay? At 100 wpm, i imagine you're pretty experienced. Maybe even trained. Do you keep your hand on the home row? On the asdf? Are you a touch-typist? If you type using the traditional homerow, why do you move your hand off that position to game?

Nope, not trained, nor necessarily "experience" - only actively been using computers since December 2008, just have an aptitude for it, I guess.

I don't keep my fingers on the traditional home row, I move them about as I see fit, depending on what word(s) I'm typing.

I touch type, yes.

I think my original intention was to find out if it bothered anyone that most people use the keyboard differently while gaming than while typing. The extra buttons argument really isn't that important.

Yep - looks like most people respect your ESDF but not many people seem to care about the fact you don't have to move your index finger to enter typing mode.

In most situations we're talking about where your hand is on WASD or ESDF, your other hand is on the mouse right? When my brain switches from 'moving/looking mode' to 'typing mode' I have to bring my right hand off the mouse over to the keyboard and I think my left hand moves down and across one step without me thinking about it consciously.

I use WASD, but I really should adapt to ESDF, because I'm so tired for reaching for the 6-7 keys (typical hotkeys), and using QAZ for additional functions could be very handy in some games. Pity that's going to require a lot of manual rebinding considering WASD is more of an industry standard.

I use arrow keys AND wasd.
