Wasn't sure about Resident Evil 5 ...

I've been a fan of RE since the start... RE1 was the first game I've had for my PS1 and I've owned every RE game ( except for Outbreak File #2 because I just didn't care for the first one ).
When Resident Evil 4 came out to "revamp" the series I was a little excited to check it out. I've played it several times over now on the Gamecube, ps2 and recently on the wii just to check out the controls ( and it is by far the best version of 4 out there ). When I started reading up on RE5 I wasn't too sure they were going in the right direction... always having a partner (wasn't a big fan of Zero... so this made me cringe), more "action" less puzzles, stages instead of an open map etc...
I just finished chapter 3 on RE5 today and had to get some feedback from fans of the series about the changes they've made. After playing this far I can say that although I had my worries about the changes; this is another step forward for the series.
So yeah... anyone else surprised by how well it actually turned out ? What about the changes do you like/not like as compared to the others ? (my favorite little "tweek" so far is the quick-select item/weapon option with the digital)

I think the changes made are for the better. If you look at RE4 by itself it dosn't have much in common with the rest of the series. RE5 uses some of the ideas from the original Resident Evil and I think it's a balanced blend of the two.

I still wish you could have more item boxes.

I have to say, RE5 is just not as scary as the others, which I find disappointing, I loved getting the shit scared out of me by simple tactics such as a guy bursting through a wall (I'm looking at you RE2) or the complete drop off of music when something bad was going to happen.
That being said, I am enjoying playing RE5, so far it's been fun (although I've been told its better if you can have someone playing as Sheva, I am yet to test this theory...)

Yeah I do miss some of the scare tactics used in the other games... before a slow zombie bursting out of a closet would make you jump or just running by a still zombie in a hallway when you're low on ammo would give you the chills ... now they rely on hordes of zombies... not as scary but that being said... the whole "single" enemy thing really wouldn't/couldn't work with this style anymore ... quick-time events are about the only thing keeping you on edge now I find

I must be the only person in the universe who does not like the quick switch feature. I used the d-pad more than the sticks and now I cant use the pad anymore? That was the only way I could escape grabs and be sir speedy compared to the enemies. Im still going to get RE5, but its probably the last of the series I am getting until they can convince me other wise. But, to reminisce about the good old days, I am getting the ps2 and gamecube out for some CLASSIC resident evil, and I am going to use the d-pad like I always do. ( Its not just the no d-pad thing that pisses me off, it is also the fact that it is not scary anymore. But I thought you was tired of that bitching and moaning process, so I skipped all of that. RIP, d-pad...)

I'm glad to finally see a RE 5 thread that doesn't talk about the racism or how bad the game is. I've only played the demo and aside from the in-game inventory with low item boxes (and the fact that the merchant has been replaced) I think it's one of the best games out there. The demo alone makes me want to give it my Game Of The Year award. Am I the only one who thinks the A.I. is amazing? Sheva saved my life two or three times in the demo. I think it works great. Did they really screw it up that bad between the demo and the final?

It's a pretty fun game, but as soon as I saw the 'zombies' on motorbikes I knew for sure that this is not a Resident Evil game anymore. Still a good action game though, but no zombies, not scary, and not very difficult either (at least on Normal I have way too much guns and ammo). I hope RE6 will finally be a proper sequel to RE3.
