Wasteland 2 is currently being set up by inXile entertainment as a Kickstarter proposal to obtain funding of 900,000$. If this mark can be hit the project will move forward, and failing to hit the mark the project will not move forward.

The details of the project can be found here.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2

With well over half its goal already met and little over a month left to go it seems like it is on pace to hit its goal considering the kickstart has been active for only a few hours.

I am aware there are articles regarding the kickstart program. The purpose of the thread is to get an idea how much interest is there for a sequel to this obscure but well received 1988 title and how would a game like this be able to hold its own against a juggernaut backed Fallout franchise?

Edit: Modified the title to make it more clear. sorry for any confusion

I haven't played Wasteland but I'm still looking forward to this.

The Fallout series is currently in real time and for many people I can see this as a good comprimise for people who want a post-apocalyptic turn-based RPG. I can't really imagine Bethesda/ZeniMax allowing a turn-based Fallout game to be made so I guess this is the next best thing.

No there isnt.
The purpose of the thread ... how would a game like this be able to hold its own against a juggernaut backed Fallout franchise?
Hence the title "Wasteland 2 viability" otherwise known as how well can it hold up to the now much larger fallout that it inspired. Not that the KS program has started or that the project is being proposed.

Despite having the same origins, current Fallout games (3 and New Vegas) and Wasteland 2 are barely going to have anything in common. The market for first-person action-RPGS is so much larger than that for the old school style of RPGs that Wasteland 2 will belong to, so there really isn't any competition to speak of.

The difference though, is that this is a chance for a developer to develop a game for a niche audience with specific tastes. They can create a game that a few thousand people love, as opposed to a game that hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people like.

Anyway, they have my $15.

I don't know, I've never played Wasteland but then again I wasn't even born when that came out and I didn't even touched a computer until 1998 and got one until 2003, but I am very interested in this game, I gotta go fix my bank account so I can donate I think I'll do 50$ because I want the box but am not really sure about paying 75$ or 100$ for a game I might not like, 50$ seems reasonable enough that being said I do think it's going to hit the mark and I'm totally going to donate because I want that damned quirky skill I don't know what it is but I want it, so better to buy it now than later and if I'm going to buy it I want a box.

As for a place in the market, well I'm pretty sure it's going to hit the mark obviously not going to be even close to the popularity of Fallout but it's probably going to have a place in the market, anyway I hope it does well because it sounds cool.

[sub]But seriously if it weren't for that skill I wouldn't even consider it, I'd just wait until it's finished, damn it I just want it whatever it is.[/sub]

Ya Fallout would win by miles simply because people don't know Wasteland, hell I was playing the first Fallout games and I haven't even heard of Wasteland till very recently.

But they seem to be doing incredibly well none the less, I do want to see what comes of this.

They're not even competing. If you think Wasteland 2 is going to be even remotely like Fallout 3 or New Vegas save perhaps for tone and setting then you're in for a crushing disappointment unfortunately. Similarly the games are far from exclusive. With two experience so different there's no reason not to play both, although again I suspect anyone who goes straight from Fallout 3 to Wasteland without an idea what to expect is in for a surprise.

Personally I'm excited to see what comes of this just because it's far too rare to see these sorts of ye olden PC rpg being made today, especially not one with such an incredible group of developers as this might have. Brian Fargo's name alone is enough to have me intrigued, add to that the prospect of him being allowed to make what's essentially his dream game and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Seriously though, again, comparing Wasteland to Fallout 3 is like comparing Avadon: The Black Fortress to Mass Effect 3. Sure they're both technically rpg but they're hardly competing against one another and there's more than enough room for both.
