Watch Eight Minutes of DayZ Standalone Gameplay

The raw, unedited, multiplayer gameplay footage offers a glimpse into the game's development.

Are you excited about DayZ's standalone release? Well, you may wanna check out this glorious eight minutes of raw, unedited gameplay footage to tide you over until its release. Dean Hall, the lead developer who uploaded the footage, stresses that this is a very early alpha build of the game, and the plentiful bugs that feature in the video are in no way representative of the final product.

"This is pre-alpha footage, so it makes no effort to mask the variety of bugs. Our whole focus is on getting the alpha out, which means focusing on Multiplayer (server) performance. Enjoy and see you soon!"

In the video, the player kills some zombies, collects some loot, reads a compass, eats some food, and drinks some water. Despite being a "multiplayer server", he doesn't actually run in to any other human players. The engine itself looks very pretty, provided you don't mind copious amounts of motion blur (hopefully we can turn that off in the full release).

DayZ, which started its life as an immensely popular Arma 2 mod, was announced to be getting a full standalone version last year. It's been a bit of a rocky road since then, with an 2012 deadline Steam database [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121389-DayZ-Standalone-Release-Slips-Further-Into-2013] recently, but given the state of this footage, a release still seems a ways off.

Be sure to check out the indie developer's official website [http://dayzgame.com/] for details and updates concerning the game's development.

So here's my opinion...

--I like how they've cleaned up and reorganized the inventory system.
--Multiple options for taking things out? And customizable? Very nice.
--You need a can opener to open stuff now? That'll make scavenging for food trickier...
--A cooking pot! That means cooked food... on campfires... that will draw attention from zombies and players at night... oo boy.
--You can actually open and close doors. I wonder if they'll be able to stop zombies...
--Food and water has charges. Nice, so you don't swallow a whole thing at once.
--"You feel tired"? Does that mean players will have to sleep now as well?
--That sun glare really needs to be reduced.

Honestly I wish someone would just give them a bunch of money so I could get my open world dinosaur survival game, with base building. Actually I just wish someone would do that. I'm a little bored with zombies, can we have dinosaurs instead? I'd even compromise and settle for Zombie Dinosaurs.

Still good stuff, I don't think I'll buy it when it comes out but I'm glad to see progress is being made.

So I'm guessing the Wild-West gunfire puh-too noise the axe amde when it struck a wall is just a placeholder?

This is looking pretty awesome though. The mod on Arma 2 is just a little too janky for it to be enjoyable.

Well I enjoyed the disclaimer, game not so much, looks like it still has a very long way to go.
Also while the inventory system definitely changed it simply took a new direction down awful street and I expect they will keep rolling with that, that is not good news.

There was a game like this on kickstarter, can't remember what it was called but i know it passed its funding goal so there should be some info on it somewhere.
I hope to hell it gets made, i love me some dino hunting.

"Even extinction couldn't stop them."

OT: that motion blur is hideous, but hopefully we can disable that, otherwise, looks mostly promising. The big warning at the start bashing youtube commenters made me giggle.

Arma 2 (and still 3) is janky as fuck (blame the engine) so if you had problems with that dont expect them to be fixed (for me its probably the biggest problem I have with the franchise).

Pretty much this, any other criticism I would make would be pointless because it is in pre-alpha.

I am so glad that the inventory system is revamped, as the original was unintuitive as fuck when I played it on my friend's pc.

You mean this?

http://kotaku.com/its-like-dayz-but-with-dinosaurs-493985952

If so, its already being made. Not sure how far along it is though. There is this though:

How have I not seen this until now? It looks really cool. Now I just need to wait and see how it is if it gets finished so I can run around while, "I AM TUROK!!!"

I never thought this was going to turn out well just from the impressions I gathered in Hall's early interviews but I threw up in my mouth a little when the same zombie ran up for the sixth time. Hopefully they get this whipped into shape before release.

Get outta mah Chernarus, you zombie obsessed philistines! I'm trying to find insurgents in my potatofield, kurwa!

Well, to be slightly less self righteous and whiny, I'm glad that they get to make their own game, and that people had fun with DayZ. Not to mention, it gave Bohemia a bit more exposure outside the usual sphere. It's nice to see a new, more specialized game come out of it.
I know I'm being childish and elitist when it comes to DayZ, but... Imagine a whole bunch of people barging in some clubhouse that isn't really ment for them and their tastes, and starts moaning about the armchairs. It's been a rather awkward time, overall. I'm not particularly interested in DayZ 2.0 or zombies in general, but I really do welcome the idea of setting up a new clubhouse, so we can stop getting in each other's way.

Not something I will buy, but I hope it gets released and accomplishes what it wants to do.

That motion blur was starting to make me queasy, but overall it looks very promising. I just hope you can kill the motion blur and have private servers so you can play with your friends while not getting ganked every ten seconds.

They're still a bit broken, yes, but not the extent the DayZ mod was. Arma 2 usually worked fine for me even though the controls were a little stiff. And Arma 3, while still fairly bugged to hell, feels smoother than Arma 2 (when the isn't choking my computer because of poor optimization).
DayZ however... laggiest, broken piece of crap I've ever played. Guess I'l just have to wait and see how the standalone comes out.
