It's funny to see the ratio between people who came there to see BOps/Halo compared to people who came there for SC2. Oh well, shooters make really poor spectator games but are too popular among modern gamers to ignore. They should, however, include some fighting games tho as those are much more enjoyable to watch.

No plug for Evo 2011? Good game, Escapist. I see us fighting game players are still considered second-class citizens to you "pro gamer" folk.

(I'm kidding.)

They are sports because they have competition between 2 teams or 2 individual players to achieve a main objective. And they don't involve sheer luck(unlike buckaroo and what i'm guessing is cluedo) And yes chess most definitely a sport considering it has had a world championship since at least the 1800s.
Well the next time I tell people what my hobbies are I'll say sports instead of videogames. I'd argue there is skill involved in buckaroo and strategy in cluedo. Having said that, operation is the real deal...

How the hell can you even have black ops and halo? They're inherently unbalanced. It would be like playing football (soccer) on a field that slopes to one side.

I don't understand this argument... all of the players get to choose from the same equipment and perks and what not, so surely they are all on an equal playing field regardless of what those perks and equipment are? In Halo everyone starts off the same, so I don't understand how that is unbalanced at all.

I'm not exactly arguing here, I just don't understand your point, and I've heard it a lot. Care to explain?

You are the person who injected the word 'sport' into this thread. 'eSport' is a simpler moniker than Competitive/Professional Gaming.

DAT NUKE by jinro, was both horrifying for the protoss player in me and glorifying in equal measures :D
Such a mark out moment, talk about two quality nukes; first the fully saturated base with the perfect double pronged harass/distraction and then the emergency defensive nuke taking out all the tier 3 units for the instant GG.

From r/starcraft:
Is there a recording of both matches somewhere? I was going to watch them, but I can't find them anywhere, except in what Google tells me is Chinese.

I think for now VODs are only for silver/gold subscribers, but there were re-broadcasts during day EU time. Not sure what's their policy on VODs after the tourney ends tho, since they decided to not to post replay packs this time due to the fact that apparently those allow to DDoS players.

Holy crap I'm still shaking from how awesome those finals and grand finals games were. So much Blue flame helions.

Also, Boxer vs. Rain game 1 at MLG Anaheim. Watch and be amazed.

Pretty much all competitive games are sports by definition, as long as they require skill. Hell, poker is considered a sport. Sport does have more than one definition, you know.

The Halo MLG community is such a waste of time. It's difficult to take a community seriously when they invent their own gametype with their own modifications to the world's rules so that they can feel superior.

Borrowing from the Cluedo example, the Halo MLG variant has no wrench and murders never happen in the conservatory. Also, we use d4s for movement.

StarCraft 2, however, would have been enjoyable to watch.

I guess I could respect that these guys are the best at what they do, however, like golf, I don't think I'll ever bother watching let alone paying for anything like this.

Also, do they have enough viewers and advertisers to be doling out +$1 million in prize money?

The fact that Black Ops and not CoD4 or MW2 is being used for their competition just proves how utterly pointless MLG has become.
MLG has Black Ops on the Pro Circuit because MLG has a sponsership from Sony, so the PS3's and game discs are paid for them, also Black Ops is the only COD game that allows you to completely customize your class on LAN, the others games have classes that are predetermined for you.

Halo MLG has their own gametypes set up the way they are because they feel they are the most skillful, is the most spectator friendly, and is the most competitively balanced. MLG Pro's dont need their own gametypes to be dominant. I've seen MLG teams go into regular gametypes before, and to say they dominated would be an understatement. Regular gametypes and maps aren't competitive friendly since they would lead to super easy map control given to one team off spawn, and lead to standoffs of a team refusing to charge as the other team's controlling area is too easy to hold, plus many other reasons. Don't judge a community you've never seen before, it's very immature.

For MLG Anaheim the Stream received 30 million total views, how many people that actually is, is tough to determine, but on Saturday they did have 100,000 concurrent viewers.

Don't make assumptions you can't back up.

These are the same people who were ranting, raving, crying and complaining that Halo: Reach was not Halo 3, and all but demanded a gametype that would turn Reach into Halo 3. My issue with the Halo MLG community is not their skill (which I did not once attack - these people are good at the game) but their unwillingness to play the game as written, faults and all.

StarCraft people certainly prefer some maps over others, but the ones who are worth anything don't balance the game to fit their needs.
