This is one of my favorite movies of all time. but for a while i noticed that its really not a well loved movie. so riddle me this internet: why don't people like this film...personally i think its an all around good action flick. i mean the action is good, the story is fine, the special effects aren't great but it was the early days of good effects so whatever. please someone tell me why all the hate?

Cause it kinda sucked?

Some serious bad acting by Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper, awful directing(The guy got sacked and all!) and silly plot, overall pretty poor movie. It was a ego trip by Costner and it shows.

Have you ever seen Mad Max 2? Same story only half as stupid, and twice as awesome.

Early days of special effects? It wasn't made in the late sixties you know. Most of the special effects in Waterworld were practical effects.

Horrible performances, hackneyed story and characters, silly premise and a massive waste of money.

I also love how we where supposed to believe not only that people developed gills after floating around on the surface for a few generations when other mammals have been swimming around for millions of years and only developed fins, but also that people would be ridiculous enough to believe that gills are a curse and put anyone with them to death.

That film was like a 2 hour long ad for Cigarettes. Come on, the bad guys were called "The Smokers" if i remember correctly.

It was terrible and it cost something like $500 million dollars to make, and subsequently bankrupted the studio that made it because no one really wants to see Mad Max: Aquatic Redux.

Actually, that's not all that farfetched. Consider how we treat anyone who's different today, then amplify that by a resource shortage and a city-state society.

It was kinda lousy and VERY cheesy. It'd be a very forgettable movie if there wasn't the pee-to-water conversion scene.

I get the racism and the hate, but to put someone so uniquely useful to death is absurd.

I liked it.

Me and my dad watched it together last time I was at his place. We laughed at some of the cheesiness but overall we thought it was a decent flick. Not "Greatest thing ever!" but then again not many movies get close to there.

I liked it too. I wish people who say "Everything sucked," would elaborate. Not much to discuss with those over simplified responses. Even saying "The story sucked" doesn't say much. What parts sucked? How is the world flooding & man seeking the last bits of dry land any sillier/suckier than cyborgs from the future inventing time travel?

Global warming melts the ice caps & the world floods. So it exaggerated what environmentalists tell us will happen; it's a movie. Big deal. Another exaggeration was there still being an oil rig with crude in it with refining capabilities. Again, it's just a movie. Most movies take some liberties here & there. (Although, I will admit the oil rig was a part I didn't care for.)

I've always liked the notion of man being advanced, but then a massive disaster sets us back to a much more primitive state, & we forget our real history. It reminds me of Atlantis stories & other theories that man was once more advanced than we ever knew.

I assumed the Mariner's people originated in a lab in the last days before civilization fell. It makes perfect sense to try to make modified humans who can live in the new world. The super plant that grew ripe fruit in the time it took him to dive showed me man must've done some serious genetic engineering before the end hit.

I thought Kevin Costner played the loner pretty well. He's been hated by others all his life. It makes sense he'd say as little as possible to people & be the way he is.

Dennis Hopper played an over the top villain. Again, it's common for action movies to do this, so I was fine with it. I liked the touch of comedy he brought to the movie.
