Toy Story 3 is now the third animated movie to receive a best movie nomination. It was also nominated for best animated film, but that's not the point.

The other two to ever receive this nomination was Pixar's Up, which was also nominated and won the best animated movie award, and Disney's Beaty and the Beast.

So, two out of three moves that broke out of the Oscar animation ghetto are brought to you by Pixar. Woo!

Anyone else's feelings on this/old animated movies that you believe that are oscar worthy?

No company bashing please. If you need to criticize/praise a movie, make it about the movie not the studio.

This is pretty much the only exciting thing at the Oscar's this year...

OT: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke should have been nominated back in their days.

Nausicaa, definitely. Warriors of the Wind (likely the only version anyone from the academy would have heard about back then) not so much.

OT: I was kind of upset that Ponyo didn't get a nomination last year. Up! would probably still have taken home the trophy, and that's just fine, but Ponyo deserved a nod.
Very nearly the entire Studio Ghibli movie list is are "Shoulda-Been-Oscars", with special mentions being given to Princess Mononoke (my all-time favorite movie) and Grave of the Fireflies (a film known to elicit emotional response from rocks.)

I'm not too surprised seeing as the Oscars started including more nominees for Best Movie since last year. If it was still just 5 nominees, then Toy Story 3 would never have made it, unlike Beauty and the Beast.

Really I thought Ponyo was a pretty weak film. I mean the animation itself was pretty impressive i loved the style but that story just doesn't hold up to me. Maybe its because i'm not huge on Studio Ghibli , I mean i LOVE Spirited Away mostly because of my love of the Alice in Wonderland books and I thought that Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle was very well done i'm jjust not in love with them.

Ratatouille, Wall-E and Dark Knight were the only reason they went to 10 in the first place, and that's 2/3 Pixar as well. I'm sad Ghibli has't gotten more recognition, though.

I'm so proud of us Animators ;) I'm doing a course on Animation, so I had a proud feeling when they announced it.

Toy Story 3 makes me wanna puke.

At best it?s a slightly entertaining but overall pretty mediocre movie that doesn?t at all deserve its hype or critical success. All the characters felt tired and shallow, offering little to no character development. Woody is the same whiny, undistinguished doll he was in the other two movies and Buzz, one of the few characters from this trilogy who actually offers any depth in personality at all, spends most of the movie not even being Buzz. His only actual character development is not more complex than the switching of the button on his back. Literally.

And as such he spends most of the movie playing his intergalactic space agent persona and about 20 minutes as a boring and surprisingly tasteless Spanish stereotype. And all the other dozen toys have like one personality treat each, so shallow and one-dimensional This is the grumpy old potato, this is the comic-relief dinosaur this is the stereotypical Mrs. potato-wife. All the rest of the toys, being all the toys except for Woody and Buzz, all function as some sort of impulsive mass that simply agrees with Buzz, not because there is any logical reason for them to do so but because the plot requires them to.

I remember when i watched the oscars back in 2009, only to see Wall-e steal the award for best animated feature from the by far more deserving movie Bolt.

I've heard that complaint about Ponyo before, and I think it's because the presentation is more "childlike" than we're used to. People say that not enough detail or explanation is given, but I'm inclined to think that's more or less intentional. As young children, we may be somewhat aware that there's a way bigger world out there that's complex and impactful, but we don't really worry about the details, dealing only with what's right in front of us as it comes. Similarly, Ponyo has a big world of magic in it, but it's only explored a little because only a little is particularly relevant, and a long explanation would have detracted from the pace and atmosphere of the film.
Even as adults, we sometimes have to put aside our desire for an explanation in order to get by. One of my favorite lines (from the English dub) is "Life is mysterious and amazing, but right now we have work to do," which I think was a very sensible reaction from that character in that situation. Let the answers come or not as they will: in the meantime, let's take care of each other.

That's my two cents, anyway.

I feel the same way about this that I felt about 30 Rock being nominated for FOUR OUT OF FIVE Emmys for writing in a comedic series last year. A company or show should only be allowed one entry. Still, all of those Pixar movies really are great, and all of those episodes of 30 Rock are great.

I have no problem with the presentation of the film, and I atleast feel like I understood the direction the film was trying to take and I appreciate the style but like I said I just don't feel like overall it was that strong a film and the year the it came out it was a strong year for animated features so I can see why it was left out

I'd have to go with the 'Studio Ghibli' praising going on here as well...

Also, 'Ghost in the Shell' was a damn fine film that deserves more recognition outside of anime fans.

Same goes for Cat Soup and 1001 Night by Amano.

Unpopular opinion, but Prince Of Egypt is my favourite traditionally animated movie (from the West) of all time. I'm not even religious or anything; I just think it's a damn good movie. I certainly think that deserved a nomination more than the godawful, sensationalist Passion Of The Christ movie.

Other than that, I would say in hindsight, one of the early classic Disney movies like Pinocchio or Bambi or something. Not only were these among the first full length animated features ever made in the English speaking world, they're also just damn good movies. They're better than most live action movies produced today, and arguably in their own day. I don't know if Snow White would have been Oscar nom worthy but...wow, I should really hold off on talking about this or I'm just going to say everything I was planning to say in my future user review series about Disney...I need to learn to shut up about this. xD

It doesn't have a chance in hell in winning Best Picture, but yes, good for Pixar!

The only reason both Up and Toy Story both got a nomination is because they increased the field to 10. If they hadn't Beauty and the Beast would still be on its lonesome (as it should as I don't think either Up or Toy Story 3 deserve the nod).
