Seeing the others move through the barrier unhurt, Mercer grimaced and then walked straight through it. He kept the katana at the ready as he advanced on the building, then dropped down into the street behind the others and sped up to catch up to them.

"Ok... I'm not in the habit of doing stupid things, Blondie. At least, not by the standards of the truly brainless. I've survived long enough in my line of work to know how to deal with a situation, and I can deal with a lot more than you might think. What's your point?"

Seeing the building and its whispers I frowned. It's a strange place no doubt, but it still warrants investigation.

Aisha's eyes lit up with the black building. "Hmmm... Maybe it wants us to go there? Maybe I'll find some loot!!! WOOH!"

 

[Slenn]

<color=red>"Could this be any more obvious? First rule of demonic investigation: don't trust 'em." She continued following, carrying her spell cards.

"Where do you folks reckon this thing came from?" Mercer/Ellis asked Majek, Yukino and the others approaching the tower, back in character again. "Something the local army boys put up?"

"My point, is a dumb man with a lot of power can bring down a smart man real easy if he isn't careful. You're surrounded by a lot of dumb, powerful people, so I'm just giving you some advice." Blondie said a bit more sharply. He paused and tossed away his spent cigarillo. "I moved on to a little place not far from here, in a quiet part of town with that soldier. If you find it tough to deal with this motley crew, come over." he continued. As he said that, he walked toward the stairs and pressed a folded piece of paper into Jensen's hand.

@Random: Apologies, but this might put a damper on Mercer 'staying in character', as it were...

As Mercer walked through the barrier with reckless abandon, he found himself impacting a magenta wall that rapidly formed, then he was covered in black flames that burned far hotter than any mortal flame. Due to his incredible amount of stored biomass, he wasn't immediately incinerated, but he felt himself losing mass quickly as the flames began to consume him. However, for what it was worth, he was past the barrier.

Those who approached the building would find that the entrance had massive, 20 foot tall doors. The doors were already wide open, showing a long corridor dimly lit by candles that hung from the walls.
The whispers continued, urging everyone to enter the building, they grew louder, but still sounded soothing.

"Must be a party. Is it somebodies birthday?" Majeh quipped as he waled into the doors, looking for any sign of danger and trying to sense any foes hiding in the dark.

He wouldn't trip any bobby-traps so easily, either.

 

[Chungus]

Hearing the sound of something combusting, both Caius and Yeul wheeled around, Caius doing so far more swiftly. Seeing ellis/Mercer covered in flames, Yeul stepped over to see if there was something she could do, searching for a source of water once she realized there wasn't. For the most part, Caius did nothing, believing Ellis/Mercer a dead man walking.

 

[Slenn]

Reimu kept her senses active to see if there were any demonic souls nearby.

Yukino looks back at Mercer being on fire and giggles. [color=bb66bb] "Oh hey, you. You're kinda on fire, you should try to fix that." [/color] She happily skips into the hallway. Despite her carefree appearance, she wouldn't set traps off.

Rex just stands back taking in the massive scale of the temple. [color=008888] "Trap or not, whoever's inviting us is treating us to a pretty stylish venue. I wouldn't mind this sort of thing that much." [/color]

Stopping next to Rex I nod to him. "This is... rather convenient. Back home, people would need to earn something like this to enter... What have we done?"

Aisha stops next to me and agrees. "Hey, but still Rex, Riven... Looooot<3"

Mercer/Ellis screamed in agony as the flames engulfed him. Immediately they began to burn away his outer layer, exposing the viral flesh beneath, though it was not visible through the fire. He immediately broke off from the path that the rest were taking and bolted into an alley, throwing his katana aside before slamming into a wall and hitting the fllor, rolling desperately to try and extinguish the flames. When he eventually got them out he staggered to his feet, panting from the pain of the damage. He began to try and reassume a form, but the burns made it difficult due to the dead material that coated his outer surface.

Jensen took the paper and unfolded it, before looking back up the stairs at Blondie.
"Thanks for the offer... given what I've been seeing recently, I might just do that. We can join up with them when the time comes to take that base but... wait." He said as a thought suddenly occurred to him. "You weren't here when that platoon of elven looking guys showed up and basically declared war on us, were you? They had numbers, packed a lot of firepower, and they had some kind of mechanised walker with them. Said they could see the future, and that they meant to destroy us because our actions threatened their homeworld or some such bullshit. What's your take on that?"

 

[Outisakanobody]

Blondie paused on at the stairs. "Sounds like another reason to leave this group behind...at least for now. No need to involve yourself with fights that can be avoided." he said in his usual gruff, casual tone.

Jensen would find the paper had instructions on it for how to get to where he and Royce were staying.

Majeh would find he could pass through the hallway unfettered, as there were no signs of enemies or traps.
Reimu would sense a single demonic soul within the temple. It appeared to be simply standing at the end of the hallway.
For a moment, the whispers in everyone but Mercer's head stopped. Mercer heard, [color=Masked Woman]Leave. You aren't welcome here, abomination.[/color]
After the voice had delivered its message to Mercer, the whispers started up again in everyone's ears.

For those who continued down the hallway it seemed to end with a large room, styled like a church's sanctuary with rows of pews and a pulpit at the far end. Though little could be made out as the room was even more dimly lit than the hallway that led to it.

OoC @Mercer: Trolled. Again.

Seeing Ellis/Mercer move towards a alleyway, Yeul attempted to follow him, but was stopped by Caius. "Leave him. There is nothing you can do."
Yeul sighed and closed her eyes, offering a silent prayer, then turned around and faced the temple once more. "Shall we, then?"
"That is what he came here for, is it not?" Caius answered, moving towards the temple. Upon hearing the whispers he hmm'd. A obvious trap... Despite his ominous premonition, Caius entered, Yeul following closely behind.

"Are you sure?"

OoC: @Random: Well, it made sense. The barrier was reacting to him, but not others.

OOC: I know it, kind of considered that he might be taking that angle even before Mercer went through, but still... eh, well. I have a backup plan, though it isn't great.

Mercer gradually sloughed off the dead layer of viral material and regained his usual form. Leaving the katana where it leay he leapt up to the rooftops before anyone ould come looking for him. Furious at the sudden loss of so much mass he began skirting around the others, leaping across gaps only when they were looking the other way. Once he was in an entirely different location from where he started, he reassumed another form- Raziel.
"Time to see how much they missed me." He muttered, dropping into the alley and moving out so that he could catch up with them again. Hearing the voice, he snarled at it out loud.
"Is that so? Well guess what? I owe you a messy, painful death now, and I make a point of repaying my debts. I'm going nowhere without replacing what you took from me just now."

"I wonder though. Suppose they were telling the truth? If they can find the few of us holed up in your new place, we won't be able to hold them off on our own."

 

[Saltyk]

"A Church? Geez, I hate this Christian myth stuff." Majeh said as he walked towards the pulpit. "Well, since we're in a church there can't be a demon, right?"

OoC: @Drak: For the record, Majeh can sense demons, too. Also, he can sense spirits, dark powers, and things like that.
