I think that SOME (some, not all) people whose family members or friends died in the war need a little time to heal. Just give it a couple years after it ends (if it ever ends) to just give them time.

Plus, WWII and the War in the Middle East have two different cultures behind it. WWII had massive propaganda of Americans being superheroes conquered the often-stereotyped enemy for nothing more than justice and revenge of the soldiers of Pearl Harbor. In the Middle East, Americans try to say it's all for the best, but can't shake the feeling that we are doing it for oil. Plus, the enemy was an organized force out in the open, while the Taliban is quite hard to point out, since they are dressed as every men (this was the problem with Vietnam as well.)

Plus, the home front behavior was quite different in the two wars. If you did not support the US in WWII, society alienated you. You were sometimes persecuted. Nowadays, everyone has their own opinion. This can be seen in the view of the Presidency. FDR was almost universally loved in war time for numerous reason. Bush had some of the lowest approval ratings in history. People called FDR a hero and a great leader. People called Bush corrupt and an idiot.

Overall, the overall cultural environment is different. WWII was about glory and valor, and we are still not sure what this war is for.

I think the difference between games to books and movies is that movies and books go more heavyly into character development, while games cant compare without ruducing actual gameing time (which people complain about). Its easy to forget who your fighting and to just sit back and enjoy the explosions and sending bullets through targets!
In a game you start with a group of guys and you fight and then a few die and the level finishes and you move onto the next! Theres no attachment to those who have fallen. In a book and somewhat in a movie you can feel the loss the people experiance.
Games simulate many things but the games that can make you grieve over a fallen character are very few, And cant compare to real life.

Because it happened a while ago when wound could heal. This was recent so for some, it's throwing salt in their wounds. I don't mind it because it's JUST a game. People need to learn to chill out and not take everything as a big issue.
