I'm looking for a free piece of software that will allow me to use my webcam as a security camera.

I essentially want it to turn on when motion occurs and record, then turn off when the motion stops.

So if any Escapists can help my search for it, then I'd be very pleased. And yes I have used google, and I am still using google.

Well firstly you need a motion detector, because you need to tell your webcam to detect motion.
Normaly they look like this;

But getting a software version shouldn't be too hard

I found this after searching for "motion detection software".

I'm guessing that in order for it to work your PC needs to be on 24/7 though.

I ended up getting "Yaw Cam"

And essentially a camera can work perfectly well as a motion detector, and even better. It takes a picture, every half second or so (your choosing) and from each picture it looks for a difference. If there is a major difference it'll take a picture.

Bang.

Works like a charm, sadly it took me 3 hours of searching =[

Just a fyi, if you have a logitech webcam, the motion detection/snapshot part is already integrated into their software.
