This is a thread for people who are looking to lose weight to support and gain support from others on the Escapist
Share stories, advice, and most of all support

If you are going to post [HEADING=1]Positive feedback only[/HEADING]
No "Youre fat what do you think youre doing go eat cheetos fatty"
If you disagree with this thread for some reason, just dont post, and it will disappear into the ether eventually, ok?

This is my own personal experience. I am NOT a physician, and so this regime may be harmful in the long run. Consult a physician/healthy eating plan

As for myself, When I started weighing myself about 4 weeks ago, I weighed around 17 stone 7 pounds. As of this morning, after a LOT of walking (on average about 5 miles a day) and cutting out loads of unhealthy food (cheese, etc.), 16-9, a loss of 12 pounds. I look fairly thin considering how much I weigh. Unfortunately, this means it will take longer to have a visible effect. Advice of my own - dont starve yourself. Your body will go into "starvation mode", and the next meal you eat will be converted into more fat then usual. Something small-but-filling every time you feel hunger pangs is good, i.e. a single digestive biscuit. To start with, I cut down on meal sizes. Instead of 4 sausages, I had 3. Instead of a large pizza, a medium. This made the transition to healthy food easier. To spoil myself, once every couple weeks I let myself have something like a bacon sandwich, making sure to fold it in kitchen roll first to get the grease off, and cutting the fat off the edge.

one think i find helps me alot is replacing fruit juice (which i use to drink gallons of) with Diet pop , now there is method to this madness the pop tasts sweet just like the juce but where a 200ml serving of orange juice is 83 callorys a 200ml serving of diet cheap ass lemmonade is about 3.2, may not seem like much but when you drink as much as i do (about a big carton or two a day it adds up all you have to do is get the vittamins of the juice from somewhere else. also STAY AWAY from these god dam "lose weight for summer" type cerials or bars that are about as fattening as a bowl of nesquick ( if you dont know thats a popular choclate flavored cerial sold to kids) ,sorry about that but those things annoy me for some reason. wow that turned into a wall of text and also 12 pounds in 4 weeks? thats really good dude keep it up =D

Note sure if this belongs here, but I noticed that after I left school I lost 20 pounds (roughly 9 kilograms) which makes me almost underweight.

I miss having a plate of fries, a mars bar and a coke for lunch everyday :C

What does that mean?
How many kilos is one stone?

If you are exercising for loss of Christ do not just do cardio or something like that. If you want to lose weight or look better overall you need to do some muscle building. As the more muscle you have the higher metabolism you have and thus will burn more calories easier. As when you run on a treadmill you burn up a lot of a fat but you can also lose muscle mass too which is not that good unless you want to be a Marathon runner. So try balance pure fitness with muscle building.

Well, I'm 14 years old, my height is around 170 cm tall and I weigh around 65 kilos. I'm actually not sure whether this is considered over-weight or not, but I definitely consider myself to be. I have started jogging about a KM or two a day, but I'm not really sure how much this is effecting me. Can someone tell me a easier way to lose weight? I am actually quite self conscious about it, and losing weight is really important to me.

Its surprising how much some stuff is bad for you. Cereal bars were one of the first things I cut, especially chocolate ones. Think of it this way - would you expect to lose weight from eating chocolate bars?
Thanks mate. It should start to plateau soon, as apparently once you start exercising you lose a lot of water, rather than body fat. But I also went to visit some family over the weekend, you know, the grandparents that basically pipe cake into you. That took a lot of self control. Fortunately my dad made me pasta a lot to make up, and I found out I like mushroom paté, which I am assured is not too bad.

Beans, greens and whole grains. Make friends with them. And find a place where you can swim laps. I've dropped 70 pounds since last January doing this.

Down from 170 to 164. Not much, but it's enough for me since all of the pudge is gone. Now I'm trying to build more muscle

i wieghed about 18 stone at the start of the summer (i am 6'4 mind) but i started running loads, going out for a 5-6 mile run 2 or 3 times a week while trying to cut down on snaking. been working loads so i havn't had too much time to run recently but still managed to get to 16 stone 5. still aiming to drop another stone tho. the best advice i can give anyone serious about wieght loss is:
it's not easy
be patient
exercise is more important than food (personal opinion)

I consider myself overweight at 18 and 5'9/10 and being just over 14 stone last time i checked. I'd like to loose weight but I don't know how to start to be honest, I think I should really stop drinking tea and fizzy drinks more then anything and start exercising more but the self motivation just isn't there -_-

I recently lost about a stone which I was really pleased about, got down to 12 stone which no longer puts me in the overweight risk catagory. However I've just come back from holiday and I've put on about 3 pounds, which isn't too bad since it's essentially a week of eating out. I did do a lot of scuba diving which does burn calories though.

Wasn't too hard, just did sit ups and push ups and lifted weights everyday gradually increasing how much I do. As for diet I just had less to eat, stopped eating desert or having seconds and avoided snacking. As for the later, one thing I think has been a big help are Jacobs Cream Crackers, they're about 35 calories each so I can afford to snack on them plus I just like the taste of them dry. :) 2 things I said I would not give up though was beer, and cheese.

Now I'm trying to tone up more and lose that tragic male condition of 'the man boob', any adivce on what kind exercises I could do?

As perhaps the escapist with the most weight to lose I have to say, good thread my man.

If I mention what I weigh people are going to think of Manuel Uribe or someone who needs a wall of a house knocked down to get them out, which simply isn't the case.

My basic stats:

Height: 6'8
Weight: 178kgs or 391lbs or 27 Stone 12.

I want to get to 114kgs or 252lbs or 18Stone which will mean I look good for my height, not like some lanky skeleton.

I'm also a fairly moderate smoker so despite getting to 26 earlier in the year, when I tried to give that up I found my weight shooting up again, when I started smoking it leveled off and began to drop. Problem situation, which do I focus more on, smoking or my weight? Easy answer really, smoking is less of a deal breaker for many than being a fat bastard is, plus weight problems affect your health sooner than smoking related ones. Lung cancer will kill me, diabetes will mean I can't pursue the career I want. Anyway, if this thread continues, which I hope it does with updates from all those currently on the path of losing weight, this is my starting point.

Now onto how I've lost the weight I have already lost. Excercise. It doesn't have to be vigourous, it doesn't have to be runs or weight training. From where I live to the town center is around 4 miles, so whenever I want to go out now I simply walk there and walk back. It saves me money on petrol, helps burn calories and enables me to have a pint (If you're a drinker, nothing is more frustrating than sitting in a pub with a coke because you brought the car with you). If I'm not going out into town, I'll take a drive to a local wood or lake and walk around that.

Willpower is another big problem for those who need to lose serious weight. It isn't just about a few lbs here and there, we have to change our entire lifestyle, one we have been living with for years and to go cold turkey will break most people very quickly. We need some kind of pleasure and the reason most people are really fat is because they get that chemical boost from food. I get it from three things, Good food, good beer and cigarettes. Have your curry or your kebab, go out for a night on the piss and drink 20 pints of calorific beer, just do it far less often. I used to go out sometimes several times a week and consume maybe 4000-5000 calories of alcohol a night. Now if I do it once a month, sometimes once every couple of months, you appreciate it more. The same thing goes for food, instead of having a weekly takeaway or stopping off at the drive through for a milkshake and nuggets on the way home, do it once a month. Your calorie intake falls dramatically and untill the endorphines from excercising kick in as your new found pleasure, you still get that evening of enjoyment every so often to keep you on target.

welcome! nice to see you have a realistic target! a major thing is where people want fat to disappear overnight, then the next week they weigh 2 pounds less. keep us informed!

good job mate! if i knew how to lose the old moobs, i would help! from what i understand, its best to lie on your back, arms spread, with weights in each hand. slowly put your arms together above you, then lower to have your hands hover above the ground. id do this, but i dont have any weights

impressive! my local council thought it would be a good idea to build swimming baths with glass walls alongside a fairly major road!
