Weird difficulty curves in videogames

After playing Borderlands for a while, i noticed one thing which kept on happening to me, i would dominate enemies in some areas like an undefeatable gaming god, and then move to another area of the game and get flattened by an enemy which, in the previous area, i could kill by looking at it angrily.

although i do love borderlands dearly as a game, i thought the difficulty curve was odd and very inconsistent, jumping from easy to impossible instantly.

so, fellow escapists, i would like to invite you all to share your views on videogames, which in your opinion have wierd difficulty curves.

(p.s. please be nice, this is my very first post)

Welcome, welcome. Leave your hat and coat at the reception, and a herald will announce your newly aqcuired membership by the large iguana to your left.

Well, the first thing that pops into my mind would be the last gig on Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.

Everything was a cruise until Raining Blood by Slayer.

I harken to think Demon Soul's does that, but on purpose really. You will be slowly but surely making your way through a dungeon, killing enemies conservatively and sparing you health herbs, and then turn a corner to be surprised attacked by some charging skeleton thing that murders you before you can get a hold of yourself. Though that is done on purpose since the designers are all sadistic.

I had this problem with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. On the default difficulty setting, the game's just a touch shy of truly difficult, right up to the point when you hit Felucia. That's when the kid gloves come off, apparently, with enemies that can cut your lifebar by half with one combo, Rancors that can take you out with a sweep of the claw and swarms enemies that can't be killed until you take out the "chieftain" that leads them.

Battletoads has a kind of weird difficulty curve. Considering the first level is pretty much a cakewalk and then your thrown to the wolves in the very next stage.

I've seen some funky ones, and Borderlands was a little bit odd, but at least they had the levels system to help explain it.

FFVIII pissed me off, because it levelled up enemies at the same rate as you, so you couldn't go back to the starter areas and just pwn shit

Deus Ex: Early spike, then completely easy going until near the end when it then spikes again, before an easy final level.

OMG... yes!!!!

I completely forgot about that game. And forget about ever trying to beat it coop. You would kill your friend or cause his/her death more often than help the situation. That game ended friendships.

Mario Kart, you use a good handling kart and blow through the 150cc, then you use a big strong, hard to turn car and you can't even do Rainbow Road without falling 6 times a lap.

I found the curve for Batman: Arkham Asylum kinda strange.
As the Scarecrow levels near the beginning were more difficult than the later 'battle' against Killer Croc, and Poison Ivy was more difficult to defeat than the 'roided-up Joker in the final battle

Just my opinion though.

Guitar Hero 3's difficulty curve was all over the place as well.

yeah, borderlands level system makes some enemies a bit weird...

I found Half-life 2's system a bit up and down.

This is because Borderlands has an RPG levelling system.

The game tells you not to go into areas with higher level enemies, as does the manual.

Once you level up and get stronger, you will dominate the once fearsome baddies.

This has been the case with every RPG ever made since the dawn of time.

Also, welcome to the escapist, may your time here be fun.

i do know about the levelling system, all im saying is that its pretty riduculous when to progress the game, you have to go into a new area full of rock hard enemies who make you drop dead by farting in your general direction whereas before you were breezing through easy enemies in the previous area.
it just turns the game into a grindfest as you try to gain xp from spending ages killing weaker enemies to be able 2 take on the harder ones, then you realise they level up at the same time as you do, and then i get annoyed and ragequit.

Yeah, Borderlands was pretty bad with its difficulty curve.

I stopped playing after about 2 hours because I couldn't kill the second goddamn boss.

Street Fighter IV has it, but I actually think thats a bug.

You can sweep the floor with your opponents on easiest, but once you get to Seth or your adversary (and sometimes even before that), he will rip you a new one by using combos made of EX and Supers.

Killzone 2,

Everything was fairly easy and where it was difficult it was still fun. That is until you get into the palace at the end and you are in that library. Then the difficulty ramps up to near impossible. I have gotten so frusterated that I have not had the stones to try again. The problem is when you transition from the floor to the balcony. once on the balcony those bastards get nasty and it doesn't help that your damn partner is useless. Keep needing to be revived over and over again.
