What's the strangest game you've ever played, and why was it strange?

It could be level design, dialogue, plot, or anything else. And, of course, did you like the game?

For me, it's probably Shin Megami Tensai: Persona 3. It's half dating simulation, half RPG, and all awesome. There's good characterization, you feel connected to even the side-characters, and the twists are well executed.

It's weird not only because of some of what you learn in the plot twists, but mostly it's the game mechanics. You activate your special powers by shooting yourself in the head. In game terms, you're just evoking your past trauma to make your subconscious mind do it's thing, but that's not much better.

What about all of you, what weirdness have you encountered?

Katamari Damacy.

As the prince of the cosmos, you have to roll multiple objects into colossal spheres before your father uses a "Royal Rainbow" to send them into space in order to replace the stars.

If that isn't messed up, I don't know what is.

Maybe Rez HD. It's a rails shooter heavily influenced by synesthesia, and it involves flying through minimalist levels firing at enemies made up of triangles and squares, with interactive audio.

Yeah, that's by far it for me.

Aside from that, maybe Zool.

Rez (PS2)

It's most certainly untraditional, what with you controlling a hacker avatar travelling on-rails shooting down viruses.

Drakengard. I've not played it myself, but from what I've seen and heard it is simply downright bizarre. And sick. In fact, the only thing I've ever seen that's sicker is my own screenplay that's in my drawer next to me right now, and that came from my own mind...

I'm actually starting to worry about my own mental sanity when I think about my screenplay now.

Hey, I've already covered this topic.

Anyway, I'd go for Grim Fandango for the plot alone. You just have to play it to believe it.

Ecco the Dolphin for the Sega Genesis. You play as a dolphin who travels through time and battles space aliens. Thus proving Douglas Adams right that dolphins would fair better than us humans during an alien invasion.

Ever hear of "Chex Quest?"
A cereal-based first-person shooter. Got a demo of it in a box of Chex cereal ages ago... and yes, it was as weird as you think it was.

I have no idea if anybody has heard of a game called "LSD", but it's a game based around this guy's dreams... it's for the original Playstation, here's a Wikipedia article for those interested...

It seems amazing, and I only wish I could get my hands on a copy of it.

Lucasarts classic click and pointer 'Day of the Tentacle' was a pretty weird one...

Three companions working together after being flushed...sorry 'chrono-johned' into different time zones by an actually mad professor to help save the world from an evil tentacle who grew arms after drinking toxic waste???

Makes most games look pretty normal to me...
