Here the other day I hit F12 by accident in Chrome, and this window popped up. Not knowing what it was I did a search to find out.In my search, I found a forum where someone said this:
"I use F12 for my push-to-talk button in Ventrilo."
And I thought, man, that is a really weird hotkey for that.
Normally you would expect someone to stay close to wasd, but I guess there is a reason.

But it got me thinking.. During my WoW days, hotkeys were a big deal, with multi key macros and so on. There were a lot of talk about hotkey layout, and so called high value keys. Though some just have weird taste, and like doing things in a different way.

So! Question time.

Do you have any weird preferences when it comes to hotkeys or key layout?

I don't have hotkey preferences, but if I'm at a desk with enough depth, I'll keep the mouse and pad in the middle, in front of the keyboard. I find it to be faster and more intuitive than keeping it on the right.

I use a Z-board gaming keyboard. All the gamepad keys are basically 'weird preferences for hotkeys'. Without the gamepad's layout I have a lot more trouble gaming.

Everyone I know seems to use the "E" key for Inventory in Minecraft. I use the "I" key, because I find it more comfortable.
Am I weird?

I always set the crouch function to "Q" on the keyboard and jump to the middle mouse button for FPS games. It stems from playing TF2 for years, where crouch-jumping allows you to jump slightly higher. The layout allows me to easily crouch-jump without having to take my middle finger off the "W" key for forward movement.

I can't even function with default settings now with my gaming mouse with 12 keys. I always use the END key to reload, and DELETE to jump. I've never used WASD for 15 years, as I prefer the arrow keys and closeness of the mouse. Any game that does not let me set my own keys is unplayable.

The weirdest thing I do is probably putting the push to talk key on the V button for every game that supports it. It's really no more convenient than the C and F buttons, which are the other two that are common defaults, but with all the hours I put into TF2 with it mapped there, it's where my muscle memory sends me anyway, so I make sure it's the dedicated button.

If they changed the name to 'Equipment' would you change? I would! :p But I am with you, 'I' is much more natural!

This is something that I hate about PC gaming... in fast paced games you tend to need to position your hotkeys appropriately, but I get uncomfortable if the key doesn't match either the letter of what I want ('M'=Map, 'P'=Pause etc) or if it doesn't match something similar on screen! (Like the fighting styles in The Witcher... they are aranged as 3 bubbles on screen, and they are 3 buttons nect to eachother under the wasd. This makes me happy!)

Bad hotkeys often makes me forget entire functions, or use longer winded methods due to it not seeming to be intuitive to me. I work best if the game is played via the mouse, with limited key presses. This means it doesn't matter if the keys are all over the place, your hand isn't as tied down to one spot! :)

In MineCraft, I like to swap the mouse buttons so that left click is use and right click is attack, and I have to have "f" as voice control.

I swapped my League keys from QWER to 1234 pretty much immediately. Summoners are QW and for some reason E is health potions/wards and ¬ is wards/active effect

Don't ask me why my health potion button is one key away from Flash. I have managed to never misclick it so it works I suppose.

Wait what? I'm just curious here, but how do you place your hand?
Can't quite see how that works.

Without Habbits how would Maddle Earth have been saved?

Lately I'm forever somehow managing to shift-alt lock my keys, which screws them up and requires a very precise shift-alt to undo, which often requires 30-60 seconds of trial and error. It's super annoying.

Arrow keys to move.
Right CTRL to jump.
Right Shift Sprint/hold breath.
Delete for Abilities.
Page Down Grenades/Consumables.
End for a function (map, secondary ability, etc).
Num 0 to crouch.
Num 1 to reload.
Num 2 for TeamSpeak.

Don't see anything too odd here at all to be honest, I know a few people who still play FPS with mouse 2 as walk forward which I have always found impossible to play with. You said should definitely try it some time if you haven't already as it feels so odd.

Saying that I know some have struggled when attempting to play with my FPS configs; mouse 2 is always jump, alt fire is left CTRL, and on occasion edsf for movement with direct weapon binds and the like on the surrounding keys. FOV toggles on the first few numerical keys too. Mouse wheel for scroll switching is well off the menu whilst I think of it, rockets or projectiles mouse wheel up and rail/sniping on mouse wheel down. Push to talk would always be on the two side buttons, top/forward for local, in game voice and bottom/back for mumble, teamspeak, ventrillo or whatever else I'm in at the time. Fuck using the right side buttons at all. 0.o

Nothing interesting for other genres, RPGS/MMOs don't need anywhere near as tight controls so I'll opt for a controller every time. Thinking about it, can't remember the last one I played without a pad actually.

Beside jerking-around keys in TF2, like binding P as "gg it was closet" or - as "i give it a 4/20 for effort", I keep all my keys pretty average. Fine aim is always M2, Grenade hotkey is always G, Use is E, Quick Melee is V, Prone is Z, Crouch in LCTRL, Sprint is LSHIFT. I think the weirdest are some keys I bound in Killing Floor, things like NUM1 being Throw Dosh.

I'm actually liking the idea of using Space bar for Voice Chat. It's a lot more convenient and easy to hit than V. Too bad Space has been cemented as the Jump key in probably every game ever.

Space is crouch, always crouch! :D

Why not make caps lock sprint, shift crouch and have L CTRL as PTT? Could make caps lock crouch if you felt like being saucy and don't get on with everything being shifted up by one.

In MMOs I tend to go with using 1-9, ctrl/shift 1-5 as my attacks and F, G, and the mouse side buttons for auto-run, mounts and shield/speed skills. That's about the extent of my hotkeying and it works well for me.

In games were you can crouch I always change it to left alt instead of left ctrl. Has always made more sense to me since my thumb is always resting between that key and the space bar. Pinky finger is firmly on shift, so having to move it every time I wanna crouch would get annoying.
Comes from my Counter-Strike days when crouch jumping was a thing.

Not sure if this is weird or not, but I always remap any hotkeys to the QWERASDF keys if I can. Tab\Cap\Shift/Space too.
I hate using the 123 keys, function key's are even worse.

In borderlands on the dpad Up is always my sniper rifle, down is my smg, right is my shotgun, and left is whatever. In Borderlands 1 it was my Pestilent Defiler, in B2 it was some rocket launcher I think.

For Zelda classic I use wasd for movement, num 0 for sword, num . for item, num enter for start, and num 1/2 for l/r.
