Soooo... i've been having serious trouble using the Escapist on my personal computer. Unfortunately, i'm running IE9, but for the past several weeks, (even before i "upgraded" to IE9) i've been having "Java console" pop up in my task-bar. It only happens when i load this site, and it causes it to run slow as hell. I've almost been suspicious that it's some kind of keylogger, but since it only comes up when i open this site, that seems unlikely.

Also, i do most of my posting/browsing from my work computer, which is running Firefox, and predictably runs flawlessly. I don't use any kind of adblocker on either computer.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm a bit of a Luddite, so i'm sure this will sound incredibly stupid to some of you.

Oh, one other thing, my personal computer is running Vista (32-bit, i think... whichever the more problematic one is). My work computer is on good old XP.

The Java Console comes up when a java applet loads on a page. This behavior can be controlled from the control panel icon for Java.

It appears that occasionally, Escapist runs an ad that uses Java to display itself. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what caused Java to load on my machine. I haven't seen that particular ad (it was down in the lower right corner, floating over the page) since I disabled Java. In IE9, Java is probably under Tools -> Manage Add-ons. That's where it is in IE7 and 8, so it should be there in 9 too. Simply find Java plugin in the list, click it, then click disable.

Java, as opposed to javascript, is pretty rare these days, so it will not harm anything.

Edit: Looking closely at my browser requests, it's almost certainly ad-related. Even if the ad doesn't display, the jar file is still fetched, which causes the browser to load the JVM, which causes slowness. Thus, disable Java.

Just go back to XP, it still works just as good as Windows 7 and don't hold out for windows 8, because thats just more of a universal compatability thing, unless you need it... personally I don't deal with java, don't really need it.
