So a while back a guy in the forum had money problems and asked what he could do about it. I for a joke told him to: "pirate away bro" after wich i got a warning for advocating piracy.
Like my post would give him the right to pirate.

But my question is, if i wud've said: "go rob a bank bro" wud i have received a warning? I kinda doubt that tbh.

The fictation about anti piracy is a bit too much in my opinion. do u agree?

(sry for my iffy english)

I think it's more the fact that anyone with the HDD space and an internet connection can pirate with relative ease. Robbing a bank is a bit more risky...

Personally, I think they shouldn't have given you a warning just by promoting piracy, illegal as it may be, but I'm sure the mods had a very good reason which I'm willing to hear.

...No, you definitely advocated piracy. And it's not like the mods know you were joking. It's like if you say you have a bomb in the airport. Doesn't matter if you're joking, they don't know, so they'll take your ass down.

Our forums are a place to talk with like-minded people, not a place to advertise your blog, webpage, YouTube channel or commercial enterprise. Your profile has a place for such things, and that is where it should stay. If you fail to do this, you will automatically get a 1 month suspension.

Similarly, posts including, advocating, or linking to illegal or adult material are a very quick way to end your time as part of The Escapist community. An example of these are:
Piracy
Ad Blockers
Illegal Drugs in the United States
Illegal Acts in the United States
Pedophilia
Pornography
Sexist, Racist or Perverted Remarks
Taken directly from the Code of Conduct, you can see that posts including are also banned. Though I'd say you were advocating. Also italicised, you could have received a warning for suggesting the bank robbery.

It's like they always say, if you don't like the rules then don't play the game.

Well, did you advocate the piracy of software, or the piracy of ships?

If you were doing the former, then that's against the rules here.
Advocating piracy is against the rules, since this is a gaming site (news-wise), and we support the industry, and piracy is bad for it.

If you were doing the latter, then, well, you probably could have phrased it better.

i get all your points but my problem is that me saying it does not give him the right to do it. if someone had girl problems and i would say: "go smack some sence into her" that would not give him the right to do that.
Imagine him going to the police and said: "ye THE JUGGERNAUT told me to do it".

i did not give him any site where he could pirate. so i don't see how i could be advocating piracy.
(i thought the "bro" at the end made clear i made joke)

The Escapist is notoriously anti-piracy. Two versions of the rules ago, that rule wasn't even in the code of conduct, but people still got banned for violating it. As a rule of thumb around here, if you can avoid talking about piracy, do it. If you really feel you have to say something about it, never advocate it, never write something about it without prefacing it with "I am not advocating piracy, but..." and never -- and I mean never -- actually admit to piracy, unless you just want to be banned. For emphasis, here's the rules again:

Well, I have to thank you, there - because I was really tempted to post something on the site that might have been... misconstrued. Much appreciated!

For clarification on a totally different point, though, can you post about acts that are illegal in the US if they're not being done in the US? (Assuming you're not advocating them...)

And on a further point, since when are ad blockers illegal or adult material? I'm Pub Club, so I don't use them, but that seems a bit much. Lumping it in with pedophilia? Just a simple "please don't use them" seems like it'd cover it, but I may just be naive.

No one's saying you saying it gives the other person the right to. They're saying it could easily be seen as encouraging them to, regardless of whether they have the right to.

You told a guy to commit piracy. That's the textbook definition of advocating it. And as far as I can see there wasn't any clear indication that you were joking.

If you were to post that and not recieve a warning it's most likely because you clearly didn't mean what you said. Which isn't the case with piracy.
Also; "advocating piracy" doesn't mean that you help him commit it, it means that you say that piracy is a good idea. Which you did.

The reason being that it's against the rules.

Break the rules and you get your punishment.

The difference between saying he should pirate and he should rob a bank is that the latter is far less realistic and clearly a joke. The other is an actual possibility and seems like a real suggestion, being interpreted as you advocating piracy.

for a guy who has over 5000 pots you sure seem to not get intranet jokes.

OT: Dude, it's not that it's an antipiracy rule, it's that people here love the reporting of rule violations. and mods loooove to warn and ban withought anyone prompting them to. So, you really have a no win situation on these forums if you wants to jokez. xD

Well, a while back I posted a review in which I stated that I downloaded the movie in case. While that was true, it's only half the story, and for the half I didn't tell in that review, I received a warning. I explained the situation to The Escapist, and the warning was retracted.

To prevent this from happening again, I will make my self as clear as possible. I pay a fixed amount of money every month to a site which grants me unlimited downloads for movies and series. This is 100% legal and no form of piracy what so ever.

Now that we got that out of the way, I would like to ask some questions abou the rules. What do they mean with illegal drugs in the United States? Isn't this incredably racist? I'm from The Netherlands, and there are plenty of drugs which are allowed here, but not in the US.

Waitup, that post INCLUDES all the things it's not meant to include? Can they get banned now?

Including crimes? As in every post about any crime that occurs? They need to get someone who understands English and legal terms to go over that, because it's got to be inpossible to properly enforce, which can only lead to further issues in the long run...
It's not quite that bad, To include piracy, you'd have to do something like link to a torrent. You just have to be careful about it, because taking any position other than "piracy bad, rah grah argh" can and often is construed as advocating it around here, and admitting to it will get you banned. At least under the current rules they can't ban you for admitting to it when that's your first offense; they used to do that.

Dont worry about it, they refuse to change the rules even though they are stupid, and I mean this in the nicest way possible. "Dont be a jerk" OH right, thanks for clearing that up, not like thats open to interpretation and doesnt draw a clear line anywhere.
You joined two days after a major rule change, just sayin'. They were even worse before they did that -- for example, people got banned for admitting to piracy on the first offense, even though there was no actual rule against it. They change the rules all the time, it's just not always as sweeping as one might like.
