See if it is on warranty, my PS3 crapped out on me a while back, I called sony, told them whats wrong, Got the box in about 3 days, Sent it, got it back in a week and a half, fully functional and like new.

Oh yeah, they are going to have to delete everything saved on your PS3 in order to fix it, sorry buddy.
Not if you put that info on a pen drive they won't.

Not to sound... well... not sure I should even say this...

Some people... Lie about their warranty. Somehow they get away with it... Not that I am suggesting it or anything! I just... wanted to... share this information so that... you could learn something new today.

What you do with this information is up to you.
They'll probably want to see the receipt, so I don't think I'd get away with that.

If I was gonna try, that is.

Which I wasn't. >.>
I've heard that it has something to do with phoning them or something... not that it matters or anything...

Ah, I use to work at an authorized Sony repair depot, and I can tell you this. The YLOD is an all-encompassing problem, meaning there could be many things wrong with your unit. But the problem is located with the motherboard. The older model motherboards are pretty prone to failure. IF you do take it to get repair, they WILL WIPE OUT YOUR DATA. They will give you the same unit back complete with backwards compatibility, but as of right now, there is no way to fix a YLOD without them wiping your hard drive, and reinstalling the OS. They were charging $179 (+shipping) CND at the place I was working at.

Also don't think that you can just take out your hard drive, and sent your unit in without it. They will still fix it properly and everything, but when you get it back, and put your hard drive back in; It will prompt you to reformat it. (And therefore lose you data) There is no way of getting around that. So, basically, all your files are done for the minute your saw that blinking red light. Sry.

Depends, if his PS3 can even turn on, its the YLOD, not sure if you can still use some of the PS3s features while on it, but I don't think he had the time to move the data to a pendrive.

Yeah, Aerodynamic is right - I can't even reach the startup screen.

I'm told that electronics break down alot because lead based solder is no longer legal, and the alternative is crappy in comparison. Alot of people claim that blasting their 360's with a hair dryer for a few minutes fixed 'em...not sure I believe it.

Damn, I should've realized this. Sorry for being retarded. Now all I can say is when you get a new one you should copy all your files to one in case this happens again.

Like you said.

"Well, Fuck."

I love my 360's removable hard drive, even if the 360 itself breaks more than windows at the Resident Evil mansion.

Check and see if there is someway to transfer data from the PS3 to another...

Nah, it's an easy mistake to make if you're not familiar with the problem.
Besides, any attempts at help are welcome. =]

I'd say send it off to be repaired. But first, take the hard drive out and put it in your computer so you can copy every last bit of data off it. Then when you put the hard drive back in and send it off to be wiped, it won't matter, because you can just copy it all back over when you get it back.

So today I try to turn on my PS3 and the green light comes on, followed by a yellow light, followed by a flashing red light. It does this every time.
I can only assume that this is the "yellow light of death" or whatever. Not good.

I'm not sure whether or not it still comes under warranty, or if it's even fixable. I'm hoping that I don't need to get a new one as there's hundreds of hours worth of game saves (both PS2 and PS3) on it that I don't feel like starting again.
It's the original 60gb model with backwards compatibility, and I play a lot of PS2 games on it, so getting one of the newer models isn't really an option anyway.

Also, I don't have a 360, nor do I want one.

So Escapists, what's the best course of action for me to take?

Edit: I just found out the warranty is 12 months, so my PS3 falls outside it. More good news.
If it is the yellow light of death, you can send it out to Sony, but they'll charge you to fix it (so my friend said.)
However, depending on the cost of getting it fixed, I would say you may need to buy a new console.
Try the slims, mine's been fine and hasn't had any problems. It's $200 for one, so it might just be more beneficial to you to get a new console.

So, Customer service may be quicker than Microsoft, But i got to keep my 100's of hours of gameplay saves.

Comparisons Aside, I thought PS3's were generally reliable.

dude the PS3 uses a SATA hard drive just take out your drive and you can put it into a laptop with ports for 2 hard drives or link it to a pc and copy all of its contents across then just reverse the process when your repaired console gets back

Hahahahahaha!
Oh that sucks dude. Yeah the YLOD is covered in the warranty.
I got that a month or so ago, but since I didn't want to send it in I just bought a new PS3 and lost ALL of my saved data.
