For about 2-4 days now, Assassin's Creed II is playable with illegal and legal copies without having to rely on Ubisoft servers. The only downside is that people with saves already on their servers will have to start again, but hey - it's something for something.

...Seriously now, I would've played the game a month ago, if the DRM was eliminated. It wasn't, their loss, not mine. And now it's too late.

I still won't play it. I was actually excited for this game until they announced the DRM.

They "cracked" it in the safest way - make the game think our PC is the server.

Do you mean that there is a fully working crack or that Ubi have patched out the DRM? If the second then link please.
Nope, sorry. People who use only legal stuff still suffer from the DRM.

This, AC2 proves that no matter what a human mind can come up with to protect something, another mind will think of a way to break that protection.

I was actually kind of curious, if Ubisofts new DRM did actually manage to ward off the pirates permanently.. there were going to be some very interesting (though not necessarily good) changes coming to pc gaming then.

But now that their grand experiment has officially failed, a month after release, it's time for them to admit their mistake and patch out this intrusive and downright insulting DRM.

Oh, and then I can buy AC2 and Splinter Cell for PC without feeling like a bastard. Hop-to Ubi!

P.S., to the op, might want to change the title of the thread to reflect what is being discussed here.

my friend just finished playing a pirated version.

I asked him, "Woudl you buy it if it was $20" and he said probably but that was most likely bullshit.

I'm actually surprised though that his computer ran it.

Heh. Haha. Hahahahahahahahaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa.

You crack me up little buddy.
It was a theoretical possibility!

Like wondering what I would say if I was abducted by aliens or something. Don't pretend you haven't thought about it yourself!

It'll be interesting to see Ubisoft's reaction to this. Obviously they won't say anything officially, but we'll be able to gauge it from their releases over the next twelve months.

They're too heavily invested in AC2 for them to just patch this crap out, but if in a ytear's time they've quietly omitted it from future releases we'll have a victory for common sense.

Although this being Ubisoft I expect they'll either plow on with it regardless and watch the sales plummet on new releases, or they'll dream up something even more extreme.

PS, have I read this right that Ubisoft's DRM has been busted, or have they actually just given up and canned the mandatory party of the mandatory save servers?

I said when I signed the petition that I will not buy it or any other Ubisoft game until they firstly remove the DRM from this game and secondly remove it from any and all other games that have it. Unfortunately, I am a man of my word so I still can't buy it.

They realized their protection was bullshit and actually encouraging privacy.
They still haven't realized it.

Semi-busted. They just avoid it. Just like taking a detour isn't a solution to traffic jams, but works just as well as removing all the cars from the main road.

Same here. Not buying it. Or the newest Splinter Cell. They will probably avoid it faster than AC2, now that they've found a method.
