Well, my childhood was ruined today

So, as you can probably guess from the title, I found out something today that I really wish I hadn't so I could remain in blissful ignorance but life (and the internet) decided not to let me. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have been looking through the Ruined Childhood section so some of the blame is mine. I also understand that I am somewhat slow with this (try 26 years slow) but in my defence this was also 6 years before I was born.

Anyway, what I saw was:

Other than putting a bullet into my childhood and just generally depressing me, it also got me thinking, anyone else got things like this that puts enjoyable things like the above movie series in a new light. I'm serious, I don't think I will ever be able to watch those movies in the same way again.

So, anyone else got something that is like that or just want to comment?

Did you read any of the backstory? It's even worse. At age four or five she was providing the income for her family, most of it going to her fathers alcohol. I think the mother and daughter left only to be shot and killed by the dad, really messed up shit.

I can't think of any of my own examples. But a fun one is the girl from Lazy Town was arrested for prostitution. Can't remember if she was buying or selling though.

Oh, wow. Honestly, I'm sort of surprised it was an actual child playing Ducky. I'm sort of impressed.

However, learning of what happened to her is quite sad. Sadly, this seems common with child stars. Not the killing, just the parents being horrible people and messing their kids up.

After reading your post, I looked it up. I am happy to report that news story was fake. The site also had some obviously fake stories I saw such as "America Votes to end Democracy; Become Dictatorship" and "Redskins Owner Dan Synder to Open Chain of Reservation Liquor Stores".

If that doesn't convince you, there's this quote from the article.

Charges are not expected to be filed in this, a case that only happened in your imagination... because, come on dude, what are you thinking? Let the girl have her life already. It's bad enough I brought her name up, but I only did it to make fun of all you wierdos out there watching the show.
And that photo was BADLY photoshopped. It didn't even look real.

While I won't say that ruined my childhood - and Land Before Time (the first one, not the 10 trillion sing-alongs that came after it) was my absolute favorite movie as a kid - I will say that got a good ol' "Jesus Christ!" out of me after reading it. It's not like she even grew up and it happened recently...no...she was only 10 years old. Yeah, that's one hell of a bummer.

Still doesn't ruin my warm-hearted nostalgia about that movie. I still cry every time I watch Littlefoot's mom die. :p

I remember something similar happened with the girl from Poltergeist - her boyfriend killed her and that's why she's the only one that doesn't appear in the sequels.

If you don't mind me asking, as I haven't watched an anime in over 4 years, what is your avatar from? (sorry, I'm not even trying to be on topic, mostly because I looked up the scene from LBT where his mother...and she...but...)

To be honest, I just saw it on my facebook wall and never clicked the article. The news site sounded like a real one, so I just assumed. I guess this quote is necessary.

You should be warned that the anime in question (I believe Elfgore gave you the name of it) is about incestual romance. =P

Well you know what the cool Tumblr crowd is saying, "Incest in wincest"!
Seriously though, it's weird as hell to me. No offense Elfgore :p

OT: Being the cynical jaded asshole that I am, I thought, "Well, that sucks." It's not hugely shocking to me, but it would've been nicer if she was still alive, or at the very least died for some reason other than she had a dickhead alcoholic dad.

What did it for me though was looking back and realizing that a couple of my friends in elementary school were creationists. My best friend in grade 6 told our teacher, "I can't do this part, it's against my religion because God made everything" in our science class. It's scary to me to think that kids are being told outright lies like that.

Fake and not-gay. :p Say what you want about IMDB, but they are very thorough, and they'd never let something like that slip by.

OT: I've never had my childhood ruined, other than going back and watching Aladdin again and finding out it's not even a tenth as scary as I remember it. :D

Please, I watch Robot Chicken. Nothing destroys your childhood memories quite like seeing your favourite characters from when you were a kid reduced to paste.

she was surprisingly a pretty good voice actress, and it pains me to see such talent go to waste. a similar incident happened to me when i found out that one of my favorite writer/directors had died before his latest film could be finished. they had said that the film would continue production under a new director but about a year afterwards (and 1/3 of the film complete) was canceled due to not wanting to fund the film because they knew it wouldn't make any money so diverted the funds to some mainstream shit anime about 15 year old little girls in a club acting all "moe", which went to sell gangbusters, while Satoshi Kon's films fall into obscurity. i hope MADHOUSE eventually revives the project, because Satoshi Kon was a visionary genius. and why the fuck can't i post any images like everyone else ;(

That's sad, especially since your childhood was preemptively destroyed six years before it even began. I don't think I have any similar examples, but my childhood wasn't that great either, if it's an consolation.

Somehow I saw your title and instantly knew this was what you were talking about. She also voiced the little girl from all dogs go to heaven. There's actually an entire charity in her name now.

In a less dark note (but still kinda dark) I rewatched Hey Arnold! recently. Turns out it's not about Arnold and his wacky pseudo-philosophical adventures at all. It's about a little girl being raised by a neglectful father and a drunk mom whose trapped in an unhappy marriage due to (presumably) getting knocked up. It almost made me cry a few times, which is no small feat. Also, Eugene and the class teacher are apparently gay. Funny what you pick up on when you watch things over.

I thourght this was going to be some rant about the TMNT movie...to which I would have said "your childhood is perfectly intact..in the past where it's always been"

but that is legitimatet sad...

:p I appreciate the warning. But eh, if it's any good I don't mind what the topic is about. Incest and incest based romance isn't my cup of tea, but if people are willing *shrugs disturbingly high*

Thanks for the reply. I was warned about the topic, but I'm more just interested if it's any good. If it ends up being good enough, I couldn't care less about what it revolves around. You can just PM me if you feel we might be derailing the original topic of this thread.

I just re-watched the whole series a couple years ago, and holy cow does it hold up well. Helga was the true star of that show and one of my favorite characters of all time. MTV was going to do a spin-off series about her as a high schooler, but they thought it would clash with Daria too much.

The emotional kick that show could have still amazes me. I still cry at the christmas episode.

OT: I suppose I should say something more related. Nothing has actually managed to ruin my childhood, but I think it's because I've never actually left it. I hope that day never comes.

Back in the day while watching Star Trek: The Original Series I wondered why Yeoman Janice Rand stopped appearing on the show. Prior to that, it seemed as if she was growing into a series regular with her own dedicated storyarcs.

Last week. learned that her actress Grace Lee Whitney was raped on set by an executive. She and Leonard Nimoy went to confront said exec in front of others, who gave a lame excuse/apology. Rather than fire the rapist and press charges, the powers that be instead fired Ms. Whitney to avoid conflict on the show and she later spiraled into deep depression and substance abuse.
