The most recent I can think of is in Fable Anniversary. There's a quest where you have to go to Hobbe Cave and save some guy. Now, in this cave, the Hobbes seem to infinitely spawn (as made evident when trying to escort the guy out of the chamber he was held in, they just kept popping up by the exit). Every time you enter another room, you will be mobbed by hobbes, and your escort will die several times. I think it took me an hour before I was able to get him out alive, and even then he had so little health if he sneezed he would have died. And what do I get for all this hair pulling fury? A bit of gold, and a trophy I have no idea how to show off.

I do not understand why people think this is the best Fable game. At least I was able to pick up a like new Fable 2 Collector's Edition for $3 the day I got Anniversary.

I have one in the original Jak and Daxter collecting all the orbs to see the additional ending that was so not worth it I honestly couldnt tell the difference between the endings the first time I watched it. I think anyone who played this game and went through the trouble of getting everything will know what I am talking about.

Then again, I first played Jak 2 before playing Jak 1, so I intentionally thought there was something cool that came from getting all of the power cells and precursor orbs...

Actually, now that I think about it, collecting all of the "hidden" precursor orbs in Jak 2 and Jak 3 is kinda pointless, especially in Jak 2 (given how much time I invested in that game in comparison to the other Jak games), because...

you don't need to collect all of them in order to unlock all of the optional extra goodies, including playing the games on Hero Mode and unlocking the rest of the art gallery while playing the games on Hero Mode...

The only thing they get you if you do collect them all in the HD collection is a gold trophy telling you you've collected them all, which would most likely be the last trophy you needed to Platinum the game anyway... (At least, that's how I experienced replaying the games on the HD collection...)

Completing all of the blue ribbon challenges in Bioshock Infinite's Clash in the Clouds DLC. Some of them were ridiculously hard and required more luck than anything. Although I wasted a lot of time doing it, I did have fun in the process as I find the combat in the game really fun. Still, that was valuable time that could have been allocated elsewhere.

I always liked the FFXII maneuver of making the best weapon in the game a pain in the dick to get. Basically, there's a chest. It contains the best weapon in the game (as far as I know, I believe there are certain versions with better weapons), but in order to open the chest you need to NOT open 4 other specific chests scattered around the world. At no point was this mentioned, and there is nothing different about the chests you can't open. 2 of them are within a pile of 16 chests you find on a beach for crying out loud. These days you can go online and quickly look up which chests not to open but back when I first played the game your choices were (a) buy a guide or (b) open no chests throughout the game.

Worth it? Not even close.

My vote goes to FF XII as well, but not because of the Zodiac Spear. True, the Zodiac Spear is a pain in the ass, I know didn't get it during my first playthrough (I didn't know about it and not opening chests goes against all of my instincts as an RPG player). HOWEVER! Once you know about it, it really isn't that hard to get it - and once you have it, you have a major advantage.

Now, compare that to some of the shit you have to pull to get some of the other weapons. The Wyrmhero Blade, the Durandal, the Saggitarius or even the Tournesol. Even IF you know how to get them (unlikely without a guide), you still have to grind for materials, chain monster and/or get extremely lucky with random chests to get them!

Puzzling my way through the Gerudo Fortress to get the ice arrow wasn't really worth it in Ocarina of Time, because it's a bonus item, and there's no real need for it. I never felt like I was missing anything when I didn't get it. Getting a good enough time on Malon's obstacle course to get that cow to show up at Link's tree house wasn't really worth it, either. I could just go to Lon Lon Ranch and play Epona's Song to the cows there to get milk, why would I put in the extra effort for a special one that isn't at all different?

Try getting 999 seconds in the Cucco dodging minigame in ALBW. Your reward for that? A one-time gift of 3,000 rupees, and a giant Cucco who sits beside the pen and heals you for exactly 1 heart every time you talk to it. At least the Ice Arrows were kind of cool reward for doing a nifty dungeon and the horse race didn't take up to 15 minutes per attempt.

Ok playing Okami ok game but I got to this part where you have to push a bee hive to a bear. The physic are odd and it's pretty hard. I admit it took me over 2 days a 3 rage quits but I did it. My reward I though would be great since all the effort that went into it.
20 praise which is the up grade points in the game. Sound like a lot but you can get close to that for pretty easy stuff.

I find it pretty easy to do but I beat okami many times and I already figured out how what does not usually work. from my expirence you will hit a point where praise stops be useful due to running out of things to upgrade in the game so the praise 20 is not worth it. I still doing it when replaying okame because don't find very hard to do and I find sleepy bear to be amusing.
speaking of okami

It takes a lot of time to get all the fish and and there is no reward for it. that is why I only ever did it once which was when I 100% okami during one of the times I replayed it. I still at least 90% everything in the game when I replay okami but filling up the fish list is something Ignore.

Any of those "Collect X number of these" item hunts that are shoehorned into games to enhance "exploration".

Seriously...99% of the time it's a complete waste of effort. Maybe for a trophy? But when I accidentally stumble across one or two of these things I feel awkwardly obligated to find the rest.

Seriously games, STOP THAT. Give me a special bonus gun for exploring or something. Give me a stat boost. Make the reward for searching an actual reward!
