Again, I don't really think one is better than the other. I find the plotline of Catherine was very good and intriguing. But then again, so is Mass Effect.Zen Toombs said:I can get behind this, although if I had to choose, I would say that Eastern animation is generally better, and Western video games (with good story) generally have better stories than Eastern video games (with good story).
As I said earlier, Samurai Jack is western animated and might as well be taken as an Anime based off of the culture behind it that weaves itself in the character, the atmosphere and the art style. Young Justice and/or Teen Titans are great as well, sharing what I call the "Modern Transformers Effect" in having the first being very comical rather than serious [Transformers: Animated] and then the other being quite serious at times, despite some comedy [Transformers: Prime.]Vault101 said:this is thread is just asking for an inferno
Western animation (I should say american) is unofrtunatly still stick in the "4 kids" mindset..which is unfortunate because just the thourght of what they could do...hell just look at the daker parts of disneys Hunchback of Notre dame...seriously
well not expanding your limits of Japan vs USA, I'm going so stat that if its Europe and the US and Canada vs East/South East Asia, the West is the better of the two.DrgoFx said:Ok...I'm a bit sick and tired of this. But then again, this is the internet and it's bound to continue. So I'm going to express my opinion right here, right now.
Western writing, game developing, music, and animation is the same level of quality as Eastern.
There is my opinion. I will now go in dept for those that care. I have stated this in the past on this site, but I do not feel I have done so enough as I keep getting agitated by it. I don't hate Anime or JRock or Atlus or anything of the sort. One of my favorite crime shows is Paranoia Agent. One of my favorite Sci-Fi shows and games are the .hack//ROOTS[G.U.] franchise. I actually like Vocaloid and a few random KPop and Jrock artists.
With that aside, I like rock music, techno, one of my favorite bands is Norwegian. My favorite graphic novel character is Tim Drake. My favorite movie is Treasure Planet. My idol happens to be an English voice actor for Anime re-dubs by the name of Johnny Bosch, he was also in Power Rangers.
In short, I believe that Eastern is not better than Western or vise versa. I believe they both have ups and downs, I have seen a good amount of terrible anime along with terrible western cartoons and comics.
With all this aside, the only reason one seems "better" than the other is from one factor. It's origin. If you prefer Japanese media over American and you are American, that's because it's foreign to you and interests you. If you're an American liking American things, that's just you being in a comfort zone. Nothing wrong with that.
I know this won't change the internet, but I'd like to not run into someone that thinks animesk drawing is the only form of art in existence and anything else is utter shit.
You make a very good point. Budget does matter, and availability of resources makes a huge difference. I hadn't thought of it in this way, but it's a very accurate example that really tells the story.Axolotl said:I disagree with the OP. The American animation industry is simply not on par with Japan's, just like Japan's (and the most of the world's) film industry is simply not on par with America's.
America's animation industry is not set up i9n a way that allows them to produce things on the same level as things like Paranoia Agent or Evangelion (or even Death Note) at anywhere near the same frequency as Japan can, sure occasional masterpieces like A Scanner Darkly can slip out but these are by far the exception not the rule.
But at the same time America makes better films than Japan and the rest of the world. This sin't because everyone else is less talented but simply because the number of great films that can only be made by Hollywood exceeds those that can only be made without Hollywood. So while superstars like Kurosawa can work in Japan, only Hollywood can produce films like The LotR Trilogy or Inception or Inglourious Basterds.
Ultimately some countries are just better at making certain things than others overall.
psh, you can't beat Batman, Spawn, Superman, Mr. Manhattan, ect. with characters that look like they stick their fingers in electric sockets. The great lord Yathzee has said all that needs to be said about the "East" and their cartoons/video games.Zen Toombs said:I can get behind this, although if I had to choose, I would say that Eastern animation is generally better, and Western video games (with good story) generally have better stories than Eastern video games (with good story).

I give China some credit from rising up from being the sick man of China, but I still hate what their doing to Tibet. Its ironic that the Chinese are doing to Tibet, what Japan attempted to do to places like Korea, because China seems to feel that Japan still has to pay for what they did in WW2 and yet they don't see the hypocrisy in what their doing to the Tibet/Tibetan people. /rant
I'm sorry but, that's just not enough, when being compared to stuff like Evangelion and Paranoia agent being for adults simply isn't enough. Star Trek is for adults but that doesn't make it on par with The Wire, and I love Star Trek.DrgoFx said:This doesn't really mean anything to me. They certainly are, but they aren't as good as say Grave of the Fireflies, or Satoshi Kon's films which are works of genuine artistic depth, something which even Pixar generally lacks.Pixar movies are splendid to watch and experience, the only real bad movie they made was Cars 2.
Never heard of it but it's wikipedia page reveals:Show wise, Symbiotic Titan was BEAUTIFULLY animated and acted and written. Cartoon Network, I hate you for canceling that show.
which supports my point that the American animation industry is not set up in a way that allows it to make stuff on the level Japan's can.wikipedia said:the series was not renewed for another season, as the show "did not have enough toys connected to it".
Still not enough, I've seen Samurai Jack, it's an enjoyable show but against some of the stuff Japan has it's like comparing Wheel of Time to Blood Meridian, yeah Wheel can be fun but it just not on that level.Samurai Jack was a brilliantly art-like show. The amount of atmosphere in that show.
So wait. What you're actually saying is, is that Japanese anime is better than western, because to your taste it is and your taste is fact and all our taste is clearly wrong?Axolotl said:I'm sorry but, that's just not enough, when being compared to stuff like Evangelion and Paranoia agent being for adults simply isn't enough.
