What 5+ year old games did you play for the first time this year?

What did you think of them? I'm curious as to which old games are holding up well without the nostalgia factor.

I played a few which I picked up from GOG.com (with many more not yet played):

Fallout 1 and 2 (1997,1998): Absolutely brilliant RPGs. Tons to do in a truly immersive and unique game world, and always multiple ways to solve each problem, many of which you'll never even notice with your character build. Highly replayable and they'll suck you in for hours at a time. The only negative is that combat takes an eternity when you're facing a large number of enemies at once (rare occurrence).

MDK and MDK2 (1997,2000): I couldn't play the original for long because it lacked proper mouse look functionality (maybe there's a mod or patch to fix that, I didn't check). MDK2 however, is still a good game. Three playable characters result in highly varied gameplay, along with a great sense of humour.

Myst: Masterpiece Edition (1999): When I managed to get immersed in the adventure on the island it was fantastic. Far too much obscure "logic" (common in point-and-click adventure games) broke up the immersion frequently, unfortunately.

The Longest Journey (2000): A much better point-and-click adventure game. Strong writing and a memorable protagonist are its strongest points, and whilst it does still have some bizarre logic at times, it's mostly reasonable enough for you to figure out. Well worth checking out, even if you're not a fan of the genre.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto (2000): Great humour and varied gameplay make this one of the best third person action/adventure games from its era in my opinion. Also, it has jetpacks... they make every game better.

Arx Fatalis (2002): A first-person RPG and dungeon crawl, the likes of which you just don't see these days. Incredibly atmospheric world with plenty to do and lots of interesting characters and enemies to encounter. Highly recommended for fans of old-school RPGs.

Additionally, I picked up Rome: Total War (2004) earlier this year. My first foray into the Total War series, and 4X games in general. After a bit of a steep learning curve, it quickly shot up near the top of my favourite games of all time. There are very few games that I've found to be anywhere near as addictive as this, with a great blend of grand strategy and real-time tactics-based battles.

Damn...you know, I'm not sure I can remember if I have or not. I mean, I've played a lot of 5+ year old games, but I think nearly all of them were ones I'd played before.

Wait! I did play all the way through Symphony of the Night for the first time this year. I'd played it before, but never finished it. As for how it held up...pretty damn well. I won't say its my favorite Metroidvania (I think some of the newer ones are better. Aria of Sorrow being my favorite), but it was a lot of fun. I can tell why everyone considers it to be a classic.

Played Shadow of the Colossus for the first time recently on the HD SotC/Ico Collection for the PS3, does that count?

Regardless, amazing game, I'm really glad I played it.

Oh, I forgot about PSN store PS1 classics.

I'm currently playing through Silent Hill (1999). I didn't own a PS1 so I never got to play it, and it only recently became available in my country on the PSN store. My god it's good. It's so much like Silent Hill 2 (a top 5 game of all time for me), just with those terrible PS1-era 3D graphics, awful animation, and combat that's even worse than the rest of the series. But... who cares? I load a game, and within 2 mins I'm completely immersed in the game world thanks to the incredible atmosphere and the sense of fear it creates. I'm loving it.

Final Fantasy VII. Well, I haven't gotten into this too much. I played it for about 90 mins early in the year, but then got a new game and stopped playing, and forgot to go back to it. Now it's on a very crowded list. I remember the graphics making me feel like my eyes were going to explode, but story-wise it seemed interesting. I'm not much of a fan of JRPG combat though. I'll give it another shot eventually.

I finally picked up Might and Magic 6 ('98ish) after loving 7 and 8 for years and years. Sure it;s more of the same, but still great fun. Serious Sam fist and second encounters ('01 and '02) have been awesome too, great run and gun fun.

However the winner for me has to be Psychonauts (the youngest, '05). I loved more or less everything about the game. The only nitpick I had was dodgy controls, but I managed, and it was totally worth it. Looks awesome, is funny, adored it.

A whole bunch. Dragon Quest VI (DS remake, but close enough), FF VIII, IX, and Tactics (never even got past chapter 1 on Tactics, hit a wall and completely lost interest), Alundra (I at least got a quarter of the way though this), Star Ocean II (it was the PSP remake, but still). The PS1 classics on PSN have been very good to me.

Indian Jones and the fate of Atlantis. Originally on DOS if I'm not mistaken (I probably am). I need to figure out how the save works so that I can actually play it and not have a huge sit time but it seems good so far.

As far as I know, just Final Fantasy Tactics. I believe the scientific term for it is "fucking awesome"

I only played one older game this year that I can remember: Killer 7.

How does it hold up? Well... I didn't even finish the first mission. I REALLY didn't take to the gameplay at all. I'll probably go back and try again, but it didn't leave a positive first impression.

I was just recently introduced into the Diablo series. I've spent a good 80+ hours on it so far and have no intention of stopping anytime soon.

Played for the first time, you say? Well, let's see...

It was either this year, or last year, that I played Fallout 1. I did not enjoy the experience, I found it very frustrating.

How old is Pokemon Fire Red? It was on Gameboy Advance, so I figure it must be old enough. I only picked it up because I discovered the romhack Moemon, which replaces the mons with cute girls.

Do visual novels count? I tried Fate Stay/Night...

And... I guess that's it as far as playing old games for the first time.

KOTOR I and II, and Morrowind. Sort of. I kind of hate Morrowind and haven't played it in like a month, so it's probably a good thing I was able to get the whole thing for no more than $10... x:

Pikmin 2. Hated the first one because of the limitations on the amount of days you play, so I never touched the new one until just recently when I found out there isn't one of those things in it. It's definitely a kiddy game but it is honestly fun.
