It's one of my favourite manga and, while I'm still looking forward to it, I'm a little disappointed they altered the protagonist to fit the current trend. The vulnerable straight-laced 'lovable nerd' (and oft-unwitting harem-master) stereotype is fine, and I realise the original was a product of the 90's tastes, but I would have preferred they stuck to the slightly idealised jack-of-all-trades 'everyman' because at this point such a character has become a novelty I could appreciate.
I find the differences in characterisation, even the subtle ones, quite jarring and, although I could make a much stronger case were I to go into to great detail (nit-picking to hell and back as it were), I think even a mere side-by-side comparison goes some of the way to demonstrating my point:
I realise the intended purpose is creating a more relatable character but it's beginning to grate a little. It's part of the reason I liked Aldnoah's Inaho as much as I did as he didn't cack his kecks at the sight of his own shadow.
Also, considering their near-permanent state of abject terror, I'm surprised more modern-protagonists don't suffer heart-attacks.
