Simply put, all game servers are owned and operated by the company. So you can't host online games on your own servers. That means you'll play the game vanilla, by their rules.

It's good to stop piracy, and generally avoid confusion among newer players since everything is the same where ever you go, but other despise it because you can't mod servers and do what you want.

Someone else may have a better opinion.

in addition, Dedicated servers can also be a good thing! For FPS games they don't do so well but games like Heroes of Newerth (DoTA clone game). Since the game latency isn't determined by a host games aren't as laggy and the host doesn't have the slight advantage.

It's a computer, usually in a place with good connections and fast internet, that is used solely for the purpose of running a specific server. A lot of companies have dedicated servers to get the ball rolling for their multiplayer games, but that's not what the controversy is over. Anyone can set up (or, if you live in less than ideal conditions, rent out) a dedicated server, then they have complete control over it. It's wanted so much because it is the key part of clan gaming and modding communities, as well as providing a better play experience to players. Player hosted dedicated servers have also kept a few games I know running long after the developer has apparently abandoned it (meaning only company owned dedicated servers ala Bad Company 2 is bad, though DICE seems to support their games for a pretty good amount of time, making it less of an issue).

Not to mention that they don't get people in trouble with their ISPs.

You see (for the benefit of the OP), some Internet Service Providers specifically say that you are not allowed to host online games while using them. If there's dedicated servers, that's no problem. However, since in, say, a matchmaking system, you have no control over whether or not you're hosting, this can get you in serious trouble with your ISP.
