freelancer, really need to check that one out.
I thought I was the only one who knew about that game, hooray! Other than the guy at CompUSA or GameStop or something who tried to buy it off me when I mentioned it. You should try Dark Star One. It's similiar, and worth at least playing.

Counterpoint: never in my life have I ever played a game that controlled as badly as these two. I couldn't make it to the second cutscene, it was so bad. Make sure you try a demo or something first to make sure you can deal with it.
I had the same problem. I watched someone play the first one, I bought the second one, and read about the third. Great games ruined by completely gameplay/control.
Other than stuff already suggested there is:
FarCry-one of the best FPS' ever. Why? Because you can fucking learn around corners which seems to be impossible for everyone else. Unlike all other FPS' it was long, enough of a challenge, and had a good story line. The script and acting for the main character is awful, but it was made in Germany originally.
Portal- A fun way to spend an afternoon or two, flinging your self through portals to solve puzzles.
Morrowind/Daggerfall- Some of the best games ever. If Daggerfall is too dated for you, try Morrowind.
Sea Dogs II/Pirates of the Caribbean - It has the same name and logo as the movie, but has nothing to do with them, no (good)idea why they changed the name. A good pirate RPG where you can make sure everyone's buckles have been thoroughly swashed, loot stuff, sail around, and other pirate and non-pirate stuff. Unlike the title states, it's not all pirates.
