The Thief series, Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid (please not part 4 but every other MGS game).

Edit: Maybe you want to try out XIII. It's an FPS with stealth. Sure it's more of an shooter than a real stealth game but It does a pretty good job with the stealth.

Give it to Splinter Cell, That game had it down pat.

Of course, lots of games have Stealth Elements. For something more varied, try out Fallout 3. All sorts of stuff going on, but you can be a thief and pick up a geniune cloaking field.

Honestly, Thief did it best, but that's for obvious reasons, it focused its core mechanic around a eays vision.

Honestly, Hitman surprised me in how *not* stealth based it was....

Tenchu...

i actually made a drinking game out of it... me and a friend would take turns wiping out the whole town and if you got spotted you had to take a shot.

Thief.

That's it, really. The thief games are the only properly published 3D first-person games which it is possible to complete without engaging in combat. They ARE stealth. Nothing else even comes close for using stealth as a decent mechanic. Can the guy who suggested rolling a thief class in Oblivion please say they were joking? Just because PTerry does it it doesn't make it right.

I can only imagine that the people here suggesting Hitman or MGS have never actually played Thief. Splinter Cell is probably the best after that, but even so, it's too combat focussed for my liking as a stealth game.

Seriously, play Thief. The third one if you're fussy about graphics, but the second one is really very good indeed. Great plots, brilliant voice acting, and on occasions pants-wettingly scary and tense. Oh, and they have an amazing fantasy-steampunk setting. Perfect.

Bloodlines, Thief, as mentioned, they are excellent, Penumbra, oh, Penumbra, Silent storm, Hammer and sickle. The latter two are not necessarily stealth-based, but they have a well-made stealth part, and the games' stealth parts are really nice, and the second one also has the lovely part with disguises and stuff, which I suppose Hitman does as well, but I haven't played those.

You know, I'm getting this weird feeling that Thief is a good stealth game. Don't know how I know, though. :p

1. Any of the games from the Thief Series
2. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
3. Metal Gear Solid 3
4. Metal Gear Solid 4
5. Splinter Cell Double Agent
6. If you want a shooter with stealth elements, play The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

What about Art of Theft? It's awesome and it's free.

This is seconded: it's a really good stealth game. I really enjoyed playing it.
