There are no drawbacks to owning a PS3, but this line is what has me worried. This world is full of evi people who like to sell worthless crap for as much as they can get. If you could guarantee you're not buying a shined up piece of crap, like say if it's from a friend, then it might not be so big a deal. But if you're talking about off a place like ebay, then you just have to be wary of it already having issues that someone else couldn't fix themself.

Personally, I'd just go out and buy a new one. A LOT les risk of flushing your money down the drain.

There's as much risk in buying a used PS3 as there is in buying a used anything.

Edit. Oops, miss read the price there, sorry. Still, you'd best just buy a new one and be on the safe side.

Usually, as long as you have ideas on games you'd enjoy, the only risk is wasting away in front of one. The YLOD (Yellow light of Death) is very, very uncommon.

if you live in Australia and particularly Victoria, you can save on a powerpoint for a set top box for the Play TV to have digital so that's one reason

but apart from the crappy net browser, nothing really, i've never had a bug in it unlike my 360, it has a wireless reciver, something which is an extra for 360 from what i heard (my 360 has none), blue ray, so if your into big RPGs you don't have any disk swapping (like FF XIII and Mass Effect 2) infact anything i can do on the 360 i can do on the PS3 and more

@Giantpanda602

you forgot Naruto: Rise of the Ninja and Naruto: The Broken Bond for 360 exclusive which is a real shame

So far you're the first person in this entire thread to mention it... closet Microsofanboyism if I've ever seen it! But seriously, I have no idea why anyone would say PS3 exclusives suck unless maybe they've never actually played any of them. I could understand saying they prefer Gears of War to Resistance, or something like that. But not just claiming they suck.

Ditto (wait, not since release, but not too long after release either). The PS3 is a very reliable piece of equipment compared to the 360. All you have to worry about is whether or not you're going to be able to find enough games you want to buy on it to justify the purchase.

I bought my PS3 used. Had it for quite awhile, (it's the fat one). Anyways, I haven't had any problems with it.

Shoddy internet connections for online play, less support from dual platform companies, and I personally don't like how R1 is the fire button.

Other than that, it's pretty stellar.

If you play with friends, go to the system with the majority of them. If not, PS3's got some damn fine looking games.

Buy a new PS3 and you have absolutely nothing to worry about. No regrets.

two Ps3 died on me, both with a drive error, it's a well known problem for the repair service, so hope they die while you still have warranty...

You're really asking? PFFT! My first PS3 I got was one of the early 20 GB models. I had that from Fall of 2006 through the mid-Summer of 2009. That was when it pulled the YLoD on my arse. I really did NOT LIKE the fact that all my old PS2 games can't be played on it. That's the only drawback for now. At least until all the PS2 games get put into the Playstation Store. A good few of which I hope they'll put up for free full downloads.

My current PS3 is one of the 60 GB models. Still a fatboy, but the cooling is way better than the old 20 GB models. I actually had to buy an exhaust fan for my old PS3 so I could play for hours and not worry about overheating. The 60 GB models, pfft. No overheating issues to be found. ^_^

The only "real issues" I have had from it are when it locks up. Other than that, I have not had one single complaint about it.

360s and 360 owners can just shut up about the constant RRoDs. It's their own damn fault for buying faulty equipment in the first place. Speaking of which, a while back I read somewhere, I forget where exactly, that for every SINGLE YLoD case, there were 1,000 RROD cases. What's that tell you?

Risks:
Spending $300 + money on games only to not be interested in any of them.

Unlikely, though, with the large collection of games that it had built up.

There's no risk between buying a PS3 and the Xbox 360 S. It's all a matter of taste and/or your budget. Granted, buy an older model 360 and you're flirting with disaster.

But there are trade-offs between the consoles. In general, visual fidelity of multiplatform games is better on the 360. See: Crysis 2, Bayonetta, and most Call of Duty games. You have some great online service, and there's much fun to be had with the Xbox LIVE Party feature. And the controller feels very comfortable in your hands and Kinect is pretty damn cool. You do however, have to pay monthly/annually to use Xbox LIVE in its entirety. They have a restricted version for free which sadly doesn't let you play online.

PS3 is more of the Swiss Army knife. You have your games, but generally you sacrifice graphics for free access to online multiplayer. At least, that's how I see it. For me, the PS3 is more cost-effective. I can access the Internet, browse my Facebook, watch my HD movies, etc, at the low, low price of $0.00 a month. And if you ELECT to use the PS3's paid service, there's a mighty fuck ton of rewards. Early access to demos, deals all across the Marketplace, etc. I like the 360's rewards program a little bit better in that when you pay for your monthly fee, or you buy select content, they actually reimburse you some of the cost, in Microsoft Points. I haven't seen Sony do that yet.

In the end, it's up to your own personal taste. I personally miss the enhanced graphics when it comes to multiplatform releases, I miss the Party chat system (You're only allowed 1 on 1 conversations on PS3), and I miss the fuck out of Bad Company 2. But I think playing the same games, albeit with reduced quality, for free is much better. I'm personally financially tight, so not having to pay monthly was the selling point.

If you or your family has disposable income, get a 360. If you're on a month-to-month budget, get a PS3.

My fat one died on me, and apparently they don't very often. Now the slim ones, not sure what the failure rate is on those, but I haven't heard a single instance of one dying.

Dont worry about reliability. The ps3 (even the fatter generation) is fairly solid. the bluray laser on mine broke which resulted in a $100 (AUD) fix at a shop (sony would have just refurbished it with another broken one). Other than that no problems.
That said, i dont know about a used one. I dont trust other people with technology

The only real risk are the games. The games released on the PS3 are different to those on the 360, so make sure you know of games which may interest you. I prefer the games on the PS3, therefore it was a more preferable purchase to me.

ALSO, you may want to replace the Hard Drive with something slightly larger. My 40gb was too small, so i went overkill and replaced it with a 500gb. Easy to do, there are plenty of tutorials on the internet.

Aside from Alan Wake there hasn't been an Xbox exclusive that ever really peaked my interest, since in some cases you just wait and they release it for pc, or at least that used to be the case. They did GoW1, Halo 2 and soon Fable, I might be missing a few.

Considering I LOVE MGS games, Sony was the obvious choice for me, among others I.e Uncharted.

Oh, and Infamous, that was awesome.
