What are the risks of buying a PS3?

To be honest, if there are enough games to interest you on the system then there are really no risks to buying one, its not a tough decision.

OT: Don't worry about that alleged lack of games on PS3, it might have been the case a few years ago when it was fledgling, but it's got a healthy library of games these days.

I'd personally recommend a PS3, since my 360 RROD'd about four or five times in a year when I first got it and my PS3 has been chugging on for upwards on three years this year with not so much as a scratch. Granted I didn't take the best care of my 360, but my friend had 3 of them and they all konked out on him, and he take's care of his hardware on a creepy, neurotic level.

Like 360's RRoD, PS3 has the YLoD (yellow light of death.) Not nearly as popular as the RRoD, but if you're buying used with no warranty, and especially if it's a fatboy (not the new slim version), then buyer beware!

so i'm going to HAVE to drop extra dough on a new slim one that may very well get the yellow light of death so i can't play my PS2 games on it without having to buy them again? thanks Sony

well i really only want the console for two games: Infamous (and Infamous 2) and Twisted Metal. Seriously. those are just too awesome to pass up

The yellow light of death isn't common, I think it's only like 1% of ps3's get it, max. The ratio is nothing close to the 360's chance for getting the red light, so you really don't have anything to worry about. FIgure out if you want backwards compatibility. If you do, get an old one that is backwards compatible. If you don't care, get a new one.

You must have had a pretty unlucky run with a PS3 if it bricked within the year. Mine's been running for three year as of this year and my older bro's (60gig fat) has been running for about 5. I'll now and then give blow through the intakes, which will clean a fiar bit of it, but my brother has never cleaned his.

Well, I finally bought a PS3, and it just collects dust. Which is odd. I played the hell out of the PSONE and PS2. And, I love the games I have one it (Heavy Rain, Flower, Drake's, Killzone, and Dark Souls). But I guess, after two or so years with the Xbox, I am just used to the way the Xbox works. I haven't had any hardware problems with the PS3 though. I think it froze up once...?

^ this, I'm baffled at the fact that, despite constant hardware failures with 360's, people continue to buy them. I work in retail and some people come in buying their 4th or more xbox because of RROD. After my second one I said screw the PoS.

I've owned a fat model PS3 since release. Never had any maintenance problems. That's about all the help I can give you.

well that's all fine and dandy, but then again there are some people who have had 360s that never failed. i'm looking for more what are the general risks of me dropping my 250-300 dollars on a used system so i know whether or not to just buy more 360 games or use it to help build a gaming PC in the future

First, yellow light of death is MUCH LESS LIKELY than the 360's bricking (in it's plentiful ways). But, as you said be wary about obtaining anything warranty-less, including a ps3.

My suggestion is save it as you will likely have a while before twisted metal. PC gaming is a frugal gaming experience as most games drop from $60 to $50 on pc ports of console games (or visa versa).

This is a good option too, despite what most people think, PC gaming isn't that expensive anymore, it's a long term investment.

To be fair that comic isnt really relevant anymore since it came out when the PS3 was starting to get on its feet. I suppose its up to you, the exclusives are definately worth it, and the machine is quiet as hell although the online does leave much to be desired. But from a purely technical side its brilliant, very low failure probability. Also i just find the PS3 to be sexy

In regards to hardware failure, generally speaking no. While they are electronics and can and do break, the playstations in general have always been way more durable and lasted longer than any other electronic device I've had. Also the Playstation Network is free.

On the software side, that's more personal preference than anything. You'd have to look at games yourself. Also the PSN doesn't have nearly as many indie devs putting games in it's shop. If that's something you're interested in you'd need to check out the XBLA.

Other than that, the blue ray player can break if you shut off the PS3 player incorrectly to many times.

if your into big RPGs you don't have any disk swapping (like FF XIII and Mass Effect 2)

Since when does Mass Effect 2 need discs swapped? All I remember was a huge download of something like 13 GB.

Had my PS3 fat for three years. Never cleaned it (other than occasionally wiping off the carpet of dust that sticks to its shiny fat surface with the back of my hand), the dogs wrestle on it, and I've never had it brick or a YLOD.
I'd be very reluctant to buy any gaming system second hand, and seeing as the slim is like half the price of what the ps3 fat was I don't see the problem with just buying a slim new.
Though the fat does look prettier

The new 'slim' 360s seem to have fixed this problem as well.

On the PS3 matter however... Um it doesn't run Crysis 2 as well as the other systems, and I've heard the PSN isn't nearly as good as LIVE. But besides that, the PS3 seems to be a pretty solid buy at this point.

We happened to have had a PS3 that got the Fail screen of Update. We updated Guitar Hero 3 and everything was fine and dandy. But then the next day none of our games would play and we just had a black screen with a horrid static in the background. We thankfully still had Warrenty but apparently it wasn't fixable as they had it for nearly 3 months so we got sent a new one. Also the PS3 that broke was a fat one. That's why I trust Xboxs more. Even though they red ring, at least they tell us what the problem is and takes 3-4 weeks to repair.

i sold my console to my uncle. who smokes. he left it on the carpet (i know, moronic) and it was damn near to bricking. meaning that the blue ray drive was about to fry/already fried. but you guys probably never smoke. or do much of anything that causes dust to accumulate in vast quantities. or have cats that shed fur EVERY where.


in my experience... the only reason i bought the damn thing was to play god of war 3. i tried some shooters, but the controller sucked ass. even bought (yes, bought) killzone 2.

most asinine control scheme. ever.

so all i ever used it for was games like ratchet and clank. and fat princess.

and what with sony saying that even though you bought the console, it's still theirs... nope. wont do it. so im hoping that KH3 is released for xbox. because if anything... i just rent or borrow a ps3 and play it that way. im never buying that shit again. waste of my time and money...
