Risks: Sony is a douche and fucks you out of another feature they advertised in the name of curbing piracy and getting some meh games.
I might just take my chances with the unreliable 360 if I were buying a console...
So you'd take the chances with a console with a massive failure rate over a feature that next to nobody used on the PS3?
Well you're priotities are set right.
It's the principle of the thing. I don't care if I used that feature or not, the fact that it was ripped off in the name of curbing something that isn't curbable isn't kosher in my book.
Besides the only game I'd use the 360 for is RDR. I can live without it if the damn thing RRoD's. I'm primarily a PC gamer and that wouldn't change after buying a console.
I can't justify recommending a console that has a 54% failure rate over a console that had a nearly universally unused feature that was removed to make it more secure. I'm actually trying to help the OP out here with his question, not spout things I don't like about the company's actions.
So am I. You have your choice between unreliable piece of shit and dickhole company. You're fucked no matter which one you choose, so you might as well choose the one that's less dickish...and that's the one that needs RMAs. The 360 may be horribly unreliable but at least all you have to do is call Microsoft and it's fixed.
On that subject, I don't get why people give shit to Sony for doing something about piracy.
I can tell you exactly why we do that.
THEY AREN'T THE LAW!
I wouldn't care if it was the FBI cracking down on piracy. That's the FBI's job, it's what they're given taxpayer money for, and it's why their logo is on the intro adspam in every DVD you buy. What I don't like is companies, private organizations with no legal power, thinking they can play internet cop. Sony is not, never has been, and never will be a police force, thusly they should not take any measures to curb piracy once the product is released. Once a PS3 is out in the wild Sony should have no control over that system.
Besides, as you said...
Police presence doesn't cure crime either.
Developers, publishers, console makers, record labels and the like need to give the hell up and let the FBI do their job. It's that simple.
