What's up with the new generation of gamers? I am a bit of a late boomer, being a 14-year-old with a love for Nintendo, Valve, and a few other companies. So I'm prone to booting up the virtual console, Wii, or my laptop for some games. Not to say I don't still play other types of games, but mostly those.

So, the other day I was playing Half-Life 2 on my laptop at school during unscheduled time (For $1.23 thank you Valve.) and I started to end up with a small audience. A few classmates, my age or a year older. Then I pulled out the MP5 and started shooting the combine. One of the people behind me call out:
"Why doesn't he look down the sights."
Then when I pulled out the crossbow and shot it:
"Does that explode?"
Not to mention the crap I get for liking Mario or Zelda games.

And then, sometimes when we're hanging out outside of class, they break into these big conversations about how they did this or that in Black Ops. Like these big, epic "War stories" about how they fragged a noob. Then they discuss how good a weapon is. And I know this will be routine. Next year, come Modern Warfare III this will rinse and repeat.
I think I'm losing focus and steam here, but I feel like this is becoming a problem. A small army of over competitive, slur spewing, ridiculing, fanboys who will line up for this stuff year after year.
Maybe I'm just out of the loop. Maybe I'm just venting from the crap I get for my personal tastes. I 'unno. Losing focus here.

Anyhow, what do you think?

Why should games by immune to this sort of thing? Nothing else seems to have been.

Careful about calling them fanboys, you previously stated that you loved Nintendo and Valve.

Just play what's fun, if you're enjoying it then does it really matter if they like/dislike it?

I think your peers have no taste, or a more polite way of saying it: they have appreciation for a certain type of game and don't have as much experience with other types.

That's just that group though, everywhere, especially here, you'll find people who share your gaming preferences.
And though that type of game is oversaturating the market, it's far from the only type of game.

My guess? They're still young and are only interested in games for explosions, killing stuff and shooting people. You're not. I've known people like the ones you mention and almost every one of them grew out of it and stopped playing.

Just ignore them.

I like it how you make yourself look better than the people you're talking about. I really don't understand why people have to make threads on this matter and not just accept the fact that those type of people actually have fun with their game. It's this weird sense that gamers have that attracts them to criticize other people that enjoys a certain game that the person criticizing does not like themselves. People don't like Half Life or Mario games, and you don't like Call of Duty.
