Actually, I'll be playing it first time tonight. Been hearing good things about this series for a while now and it was only €4.70 on Fanatical (isthereanydeals.com is an amazing resource for any conscientious buyer). Apparently Yakuza 0 is a good starting point, so ready to take the plunge.
Oh man, Yakuza 0's a great time. 5's still my favorite of the series, but all of them are great, and 0's definitely in the top three. Definitely a game I'd recommend to pretty much anyone who plays video games.

You are in for a fun ride.

Yakuza 0 is indeed the best starting point for the series. The remake of the first, Yakuza Kiwami, has plenty of references to 0, and playing 0 gives a much more complete picture of the story of the first game.

Out of curiosity, what are the other two in that top three?

That's what I figured, yeah. The other reason being I don't have a PS4, so that's a no go on a good chunk of the franchise, and I didn't feel getting my PS3 out of storage for the remained. So 0 on PC it is. Also, €4.70.

Well, I don't know if I should say I was surprised. I heard it was good but it wasn't necessarily what I expected. Phasmids, 2mm holes, Volition telling me not to trust my other skills, Is it hardcore?

Generally well written that could go with a bit more editing. I did skip some sections because it waffles in some places. I think the greater achievement was the interconnectedness when it should not have been. Things pop back into focus hours later, like the Kim's camera. And how did Kim put up with any of this, especially at the start?

I do have to say... I almost didn't finish this. I got to the tribunal and had to put it down for a while. It just didn't match anything else that was going on in the game. But, upon restarting, standing on top of a boat, listening to Sad FM, I was grinning ear to ear. It could be absurdly funny in weird ways. Most people are jerks that turn into lovable jerks by the end. I liked how all the skills discussed issues and gave tips and you could deliberately not listen to those tips.

So, a tentative 9/10. Bit unsure because that tribunal should probably knock it down further, but Kim is me bro and I cant let him down

What a great looking area.

Wait...what's that in the distance? Is that...is that something to get excited about?
It requires some existential mental gymnastics to be sure, even by SoulsBorne standards. I’m not sure if it was ever officially explained how this is possible beyond mere theorizing but I appreciated the nostalgia. And my god, being alone in that great hall after finally gutting was what personally the toughest boss by far up to that point was both euphoric and bone chilling.

Reminds me I have to do a NG+ run to get that covenant in the hidden area. Missed it the first time around.

I picked that up a bit ago on sale and the more I hear about it the more I want to play it.

For some reason the fact one the mini-games is racing tiny toy cars(Slot cars) against kids amuses the shit out of me, considering you're supposed to be a Yakuza Enforcer as your day job, but man, you're gonna show those 10 year olds YOU'RE the best racer of tiny cars and they had better watch out!

Sorry, two more thoughts on Disco Elysium

Whirling in Rags song sounds like

But more instrumental. And the music video has to be some sort of inspiration too.

The other frustration was the utter badness of all socioeconomic principles. They only ever pick the worst part of each philosophy

Dark Souls 3: Pontiff Sulyvahn defeated, and now I'm looking at boss weapons at the suggestion of a friend. I don't know whether to get Wolf Knight's Greatsword or Farron Greatsword with the Abyss Watchers' Soul of the Blood of the Wolf, or whether to not bother and just stick to the basic weapon that's been working for everything so far...

2 cents - Farron GS has I believe some of the strongest poise-breaking ability in the game, because of its multi-hit moveset. It also makes it better at dealing with groups of annoying gun enemies.

Ok, so, I've played a total of 13 hours of Yakuza 0 so far. In that time I have, among other things:
  • Defended Michael Jackson from zombies while he was dancing down the street for a music video directed by Steven Spielberg
  • Beaten several people in disco dance battles
  • Taught an aspiring SM mistress how to be a dom
  • Raced my tiny RC car against a bunch of kids
  • Tried to hook up some dude with a gravure idol he's a fan of
  • Kept finding these cards on the ground that I'm pretty sure have pornstars on them
What I haven't done is advance the main plot in any meaningful way.

There's a plot? I thought the series was about being a Yakuza enforcer who spends all his time playing cheesy mini-games.

Kinda like if Saints Row didn't bother to tie it's side activities into the "plot"....well, I guess it really doesn't most of the time anyway. I sure as hell don't remember a justification for the septic truck mini-game.

Or Shenmue but not as glacially paced and padded.

Man, you haven't even done a deep dive into karaoke yet.
I once stumbled across this and from what I'm informed it's from a "historical" spinoff game

Either that or Karaoke was invented WAY earlier then historical records have led us to believe.

Oh Japan....you so crazy.

Playing Doom Eternal.

It somehow looks uglier that Doom 2016 did, especially in terms of UI, but also in terms of enemy character designs as well.

Well, eventually you're going to have to do that to unlock more skills, substories, and locations. As well as an entirely new playable character, and a means to get enough money for the third and later rings of upgrades. But are you at least enjoying the distractions?

Update on my own DS3 playthrough: Defeated Yhorm and Aldrich in a marathon session last night. Now I just have to look for the last one, Prince Lothric. But to get to where he is, first I have to go through the Dancer...

There are a couple of optional side areas that you'll soon get the ability to access. Not going to tell you how to get there, just keep a look out.

Still working RDR2, chapter 2. So far not much going on. The game is slowly unlocking various aspects through missions, such as poker, the stables, hunting, the mobile camp, etc. I've unlocked a couple upgrades to the camp, notably the fast travel map.

Plot itself is leisurely. I'd call it slow but I'm enjoying the lazy pace at which it introduces the characters and lets you just get comfortable with the camp and the world, though not without highlights. Particularly "A Quiet Time" where LENNY! and Arthur go to the saloon for a drink or two.

The Wanted system is weird and somewhat unexpected. I was dismounting my horse, accidentally fired my gun into a hitching post and got a "Witnessed:Vandalism" warning. I accidently shot another mans horse at a hitching post while trying it get off my own horse, getting "Witnessed: Animal Cruelty" and later beat up a man as part of a mission to collect on Herr Strausses Usury to get an unavoidable(I guess) bounty for assault. Only 5 dollars but I don't think it's possible to not get that bounty. Some of the crimes don't end up giving me a bounty while others do, because some I ran away when the "Investigating" warning came up.

Also, apparently I'm not allowed to loot the saddlebags of a horse I don't own? Total BS. I can duel someone in the street on the spur of the moment, kill them and nobody seems to care.I guess what is and isn't considered a criminal bounty-worthy crime is a little confusing.

Also, I'm getting the distinct impression nobody really likes Uncle and it's unclear if he actually does anything in the camp(at least so far). So far he seems like a lazy bum who complains about his LUMBAGO a lot. Sorry, "TERMINAL LUMBAGO", which I'm pretty sure isn't actually a thing, nor has ever been a thing.

5 at the top, like I said, then 4 pretty much even with 0; depends how I feel which one gets the silver on which days.
Got 4 and 5 for PS3 from PS+. Will it matter if played out of order?

ITMT: Just finished What Remains of Edith Fitch. Little bit more than a walking simulator. Hardest part was like rubbing your belly while patting your head. I had to use the left stick to guide someone through a maze while I had to keep up with beheading salmon in a factory with my right.

The story element of the game is spectacular.

Started up Judgement a few days ago. It's.....weird. I heard someone say it's like the Yakuza games, but not so batshit insane. It's still got some really weird shit in it though.

The Panty Sniffer side case alone had some...very bizarre elements to it. If this is "Yakuza Lite", I think I'll pass on the yak.

It's an ok game I guess, the various characters are enjoyable. My wife and I like your best friend/ally Kaito, and a parkour enthusiast that is introduced later has been enjoyable so far, though still too early to know if they will become a problem or not.

The combat is fairly meh. And the advancement is also meh. I guess it's a common trend in Japanese games to have a lot of the game just be life related stuff? Like how the majority of the locations on the map, are just places for you to go eat, or play minigames. And that the majority of XP that you can earn comes from doing this side stuff. I guess that's supposed to be engaging? *shrugs* I find it fairly tedious. It reminds me of that Lewis Black bit about how you walk out of a Starbucks, to find another Starbucks in front of you. Oh look, another restaurant owner who wants me to eat their food, give them advice, and this accomplishes a "mission." Whoops, too bad I can't eat your food, because it's a sit down restaurant, and I can only eat when I'm injured, and I'm currently 100%. I guess I'll go out into the street and let a thug punch me so that I can start this mission?

Also been playing Banners of Ruin, a team based, deck building game, similar to Slay the Spire, but with leveling up elements for each member you add to your group. Has rank/lane tactics and stuff. Very fun, but it seems to spike in difficulty really fast.

Also picked up Destroy All Humans!, it's fun. Not much to say about it. It's campy cheeze. Oh, I did love that the drive in theater actually plays a full length film on the screen, and it's a really bad scifi film that I remember seeing on MST 3K. That was fun.

That's a game I really feel shows what a "Walking Sim" can really aspire to, and not garbage like "Dear Esther". The cannery bit was particularly wonderfully done, though as a father of a small kid, the bit with the bathtub was hard to take. Poor Gregory
