I finally finished Baldur's Gate 3. After 500+ hours of false starts, restarts, and 'It's been 4 months since I last played so I feel out of sync with my character so might as well make a new one' I got to the end credits.
I did get my super happy satisfying ending, but only after looking up how. Yeah, I cheated. I'm not gonna get turned into a squid after 500 hours of trying save the bloody world - I want mine, goddammit! You're not going to Mass Effect 3 me on this one game! Didn't require that much cheating, since I was a model hero throughout the entire game, but those last couple of choices can really fuck you over. One of which, as I mentioned, being a squid.
While I'm sure there were some story bungles throughout (with a story this big it's unavoidable), I didn't really notice except for near the end where there were a couple of fumbles, one of which really fucking hurt. This revolved around Orpheus and his response to you freeing him. It was expected and predicted that he'd have less than a positive disposition toward you, but he was kinda making some shit up. The first was surrounding the githyanki egg that you can take from the Monastery earlier on. This is initially presented as you being able to steal the egg, but it's revealed that the creche that houses the egg is simply going to get rid of it/let it die, because they think it weak and not worthy to hatch. So I pretty much saved it from being destroyed. But I'm not given the oppertunity to explain this to Orpheus as he accuses me. It doesn't have any impact on his allegiance in the end, but it still felt like BS. The other is him claiming I only released him when it was benificial for me. I get to respond with 'The Emperor was holding all the cards, and I released you at the earliest oppertunity that I could', but he just brushes that aside and says I should've let his royal guard free him during the encounter right after first arriving in Baldur's Gate. When I didn't have the fucking Orphic Hammer i.e. the only thing capable of freeing him.
It was nothing story breaking, but it was a little anoying.
The one that really hurt though was unwittingly leaving Karlach to die right after achieving victory. I romanced Lae'zel, like any sane person would, and with Orpheus free he was ready to take Lae'zel with him to take the fight to Vlaakith and free the githyanki people. I got to give my two cents on Lae'zel's decision, and I allowed her to choose what she wanted. And what she wanted was to take me with her on a dragon to go off and be awesome space faring badasses together. Which hell yeah, let's fucking go! Only that happens immediately leaving Karlach to die alone by infernal engine on a dock. I didn't get a choice to delay the moment and at least be with Karlach in her final moments, which I previously promised her I would. That one really fucking stung.
Oh, and I circumvented the whole 'turning into a squid to save the day' bit by letting Gale blow himself up instead. Not very heroic for my noble character, but like I said, I wanted my happy ending, and I honestly didn't give too much of a shit about Gale. He was a good character and all, but he didn't mean much to me. So I took the coward's way and let him nuke himself to kill the elder brain.
