Hotel Barcelona
The latest SWERY and Suda51 Collab game. But this time a sidescroling beat-em-up hack/slash platformer rogue like/lite set in a hotel of horror movie rip-offs uh, references. So anticipate a certain lack of polish and finesse at the very least before going in, also expect the same reverence for western horror cinema that slips clumsily between homage and IP theft/creative crutch indistinguishably. Wish it felt weightier and more crunchy gameplay. Doesn't help the controller seems to have stealth deactivated its own vibration somehow, currently trying to troubleshoot the issue there. It feels closer to bloodstained I think, whether that sounds appealing or not will have to leave up to who interprets that how.

So many games this season! I nearly forgot about Hotel Barcelona.

I completed Abadox for the first time. I did use save states, but I do not care. It's one of the hardest SHMUPs on NES for the wrong reasons. Still a fun game, but I have no need to play immedately. I do love the atmosphere and graphics. One of the goriest NES games ever made.

Working my way through Virtual Boy Wario Land.

I got Dynasty Warriors 8XL on Switch for sale.

Plan to pick up Sonic Frontiers from the Steam sale, though I won't start it until I've finished/gotten sick of 06 because I don't want to get too used to playing a (by all accounts) better game and then have to go back to the terrible one.

I plan to do that after I finish the game so I have a proper point of comparison. Also, last I checked, P-06 doesn't have bosses or Last Story yet, and while you could argue that's not a big loss, I'm still hoping to play through the full game. I want to see for myself just how bad it gets and why, and I've made a lot of discoveries already.

So far, so Tsushima, but more revenge focused, like kill bill type revenge focused. I know some ppl can get a bit weird over anyone else talking about graphics cos their neurodivergant pathway won't allow it, so apologies to those but this looks perdy darn beautiful...sorry, sorry, I'm sorry this is a visual fucking medium!
There's a wolf this time, no idea why, or who or how. Hasn't yet made itself a gameplay mechanic though it lingers around in ways that imply it's itching to be one. What do they call that in fiction again? Schrödinger's gun? Chekhov's cat?
Only niggle at mo, and this is really one of those tiny things that are just so frequent they're impossible to ignore: not a fan of the automatic wide-screen ratio change everytime you get in horse. I've been conditioned over the years into thinking that means either a cutscene is about to happen or am moving to a new area the game has to load. Also it just doesn't look good to me, like you got all this beautiful scenery to adore and already you're taking away precious telly screen real estate? Can't see an option to turn it off anywhere, despite the usual wealth of accessibility toggles. Come on ghost of y'all tie...let me love you, I've come to meet you in the middle and you've taken a step back, come on now lol.

It's meant to be cinematic. I usually don't mind this as I have it big enough TV. i did mind it in the last game, so it's not going to bother me here.

While both of these games do use realistic style graphics, they make sure to have an actual art designed and unique character designs. Wait until you see the 2d artwork for this game. I hope they pay that person or persons extra for it.

Yeah, one hopes a patch be on the horizon. It zooms out to avoid feeling like part of the screen is missing, but I'm just automatically opposed to letterboxing in games.

So far it's the stuff we knew from Tsushima, but here it is again. The opening isn't as good, that's for sure. Tsushima had a very clean presentation of your character, who he is, where he comes from, and what his mission is. With Atsu it's kinda patchy. Also, having the voice actress for Atsu doing the voice of child Atsu might not have been the best idea.

Combat is still a bit finicky, but I do like how you gain skill points by visiting alters and such instead of gathering enough XP.

I completed Wario Land (VB) for the first time. The game is a great follow up to the GB game, and I find it much more fun and replayable than Wario Land 2 & 3. I beat the game in an 1 hour and 25 minutes, and 40 seconds, but didn't get all of the treasure. I got over 99k in coins, so I don't really care. Nintendo should have remade this game on 3DS! They would have made more made cash than the treasure hunter thief himself.

Completed a few more stages as Silver in Sonic 06. Dusty Desert was pretty bad between Amy (significantly gimped from Adventure when they easily could've just used her as she was then 1:1) and the ball room (which I did by clipping through the door like everybody else). White Acropolis wasn't a whole lot better with the return of aimlessness, and Egg Genesis has the worst camera of any part of this game so far by locking it onto the boss above the middle of the arena permanently so you can't see anything at ground level, including rings, boxes to throw and enemies to avoid and/or throw. Every time I think the game has run out of ways to disappoint me, it manages to find something new, and that's why I don't want to stop playing.

At least I'm supposedly past the worst of Silver's story now.

I decided to go back and visit a game I hadn't played in well over a decade: Crysis 2. It's a 7th gen shooter, alright: iron sight aiming, incomprehensible military plot, rather formulaic guns, little enemy variety, and graphics glowing nuclear bloom everywhere. It's alright. But that's not what I wanted to talk about. Since the original Crysis was such a huge benchmark for graphics, this obviously had some big shoes to fill. The game looks great, don't get me wrong: this is still among the top tier visuals from 2011. But I always felt that there was something just... off about the graphics that Crysis 1 didn't have. And I think I've finally figured it out: it's the lighting. This was released when games were just about to cross the threshold on true photorealism, so it's obviously aiming to look as realistic as possible. But the lighting is just way overdone: everything's very bright, which combined with the extensive environmental detail and lack of strong contrast or negative space makes it hard to read a lot of the time. It's incredibly easy to lose sight of the enemies amidst the lighting, environmental detail and graphics effects like dust, shrapnel and camera lens effects.

This is intentional since it was clearly aiming for the CoD crowd, but it's interesting how much just slight differences in design can have big ripple effects. Enemies blending with the background works in more linear shooters, because it's always clear which direction the enemies are and where they're going to pop up. Crysis 2 is very linear, but its combat arenas are more open, and enemies move around a lot more. Which in turn makes them way easier to lose and harder to keep track of, often turning the combat into a frantic scramble when it seems to aim for more tactical, methodical engagements with the suit powers, tactical scanner and more mobility options. The way the suit's been redesigned also doesn't help: the absurd anime-level sprint from the original has been turned into a sluggish, CoD-esque jog, which both hurts the power fantasy of playing a supersoldier and makes repositioning a lot harder. The suit's power also runs out very fast, often making movement rather stop-and-start as you hunker down for a moment and wait for the energy to recharge. Playing on the second hardest difficulty I've often just stayed in one spot taking pot shots at enemies, and then repositioning only slightly once the previous position becomes untenable. It feels rather stiff and static in what should be a way more mobile shooter.

All you have to do is mark.Enemies, if you lose track of them. I never lost enemies that often. I've been playing the remastered version on eighth generation and ninth generation hardware. I rarely ever lost track of enemies. I do admit that the sprint is slower than the first game, but the third game actually does make up for that. I actually don't like the first game all that much.Despite it having the superior mobility options. Both of the sequels may be seven generation shooters, but they have aged better than almost any call of duty title or any cover shooter for me in general.

Beat Chronos for the first time (and the second and third) in Hades II.

It took me significantly less time than my first time during the early access period, naturally. But I didn't have this level of continued success in Hades either. So perhaps they made it easier? I'm not sure yet. I have a feeling the surface world will kick my ass.

My biggest complaint from the first game is still relevant though: the game punishes you for doing well. I'd like to progress the story and relationships with other characters, but having multiple successful runs in a row doesn't really help.

For example, Chronos is supposed to be a slow reveal. You meet a mysterious stranger occasionally who is obviously Chronos, but Mel doesn't realize who it is until a few more meetings. When I met the mysterious stranger the first time was in the same run that I made it to Chronos' boss battle. So several runs worth of dialogue and interactions were immediately wasted.

With the characters, I can barely keep up with giving Nectar to the gods. Runs last so long and they pretty much stop giving you them after the first location, so your progression with the gods is at a snail's pace. Back in Hades 1, I installed a freaking mod just to cheese which gods appeared when you start a run so I could give them nectar. I wouldn't be surprised if I have to end up doing that again.

? You have keepsake to control what god appear.

It would be fun if there was a way to see message you missed by going to quick, like talk to a character and they'd go "remember when X happens" and the conversation you missed would play out.

Lost my run on Frogcomposband after 10 hours. Went to do a lvl 20 quest when I was lvl 24 and got my butt handed to me. I think my AC had been lagging behind. I should have abandoned the quest much earlier but once you leave you can't retry and I was greedy. I didn't seriously start trying to escape until after I'd already burned through all my healing potions and a significant amount of teleport scrolls. Upon reflection I should have quaffed a potion of speed and bolted, but I didn't think of it. I don't think I want to try again. It was fun but being lvl 24 (the final quest is lvl 99) after 10 hours means the game is enormously long. I guess that's what I've heard of Angband, but still, kind of crazy.

Silver's story complete in Sonic 06. So many moments that would've been so cool if the game just worked, but they don't. Iblis in particular is a boss fight that would've been really cool if it was just a little more consistent and a little less Havok.

Just End of the World and Solaris left. Ohhhh boy.

Played a game called The Happyhills Homicide. It's basically an 80s slasher movie in video game form, where you mostly play a serial killer hunting down his victims. It's a very short game, took me just over an hour even with some struggles on some levels, but it has a fair bit of charm between the intentionally fairly cliche plot and the retraux graphics. Plus, it's free on Steam, so why not?

You're right, I was thinking of Thanatos. The mod I installed had him show up in the very first encounter lol.
