Where were you living? I found the only way I could survive the Osaka summer was by imbibing vast quantities of those ¥100 cartons of cold tea you could get in 7-11/Lawson Station; they usually had oolong, mugi, jasmine, and green.Katatori-kun said:Really? Living in Japan throughout my 20s made me open to hot drinks. Hot green tea is awesome, though it's a bit disturbing how many Americans think adding sugar to it is acceptable. *snippy*uzo said:A consequence of living in Japan throughout my 20s.
I too agree that putting sugar in green tea is a blasphemy to all things pure and holy in this world. But I think it's also an Asian (non-Japanese) thing too, perhaps? A lot of the tea I see in Asian grocers, for example, has mountains of sugar in it. (I didn't check the label once on a hot summer's day in Australia and opened the green tea, gulping it down ... ERRHGJKK *wretch* what freakin sick freak put sugar in my freaking tea ??!)
Perhaps due to the proportionally higher number of non-Japanese Asians in the US/Australia, it's considered more standard?
