What are you reading right now?

Right now I'm reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. I read The Scar awhile ago and really enjoyed it - Bas Lag is a really interesting setting. Kind of a weird mix of steampunk and magic, with a bunch of neat non-human races thrown in. Pretty refreshing compared to the usual fantasy stuff. I'm sure I'll read Iron Council sometime too, and also Embassytown (even though it's not set in Bas Lag, it sounds cool and Mieville's a great writer).

I recently finished To Kill a Mockingbird for school.

It was filled to the brim with irrelevant information that made me almost forget the point of the story. Little plot points and details sprung up from nowhere and stacked up until I wasn't sure which one would actually matter. There was only one part of the book that interested me(it involved a court room), and if the author stuck with it the whole time it could have been an amazing book. Another interesting part was the fact that Scout was so ambiguously gendered, and the author should have touched more upon that, as well.

It's hard to justify it as an "American Classic" when I want to kill myself the next time Scout describes some asshole's life story!

For books that I want to read next, The White Tiger is a big one. I picked it up and it almost made me pissed that I hadn't read a book so good. I only read the first chapter, so I need to buy it.

I'm reading a fantasy novel called, Lirael. It's the 2nd book of an amazing trilogy written by Garth Nix. It's my favourite series of books ever, this is the 5th time I'm reading through the series. If anyone here is a fan of fantasy books then I strongly recommend picking up this series, it's called The Old Kingdom series or The Abhorsen Chronicles and the 3 books are Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen.

I'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.

It's a well written book, even for a translation. It's breezy and addictive, dealing with the issue of personal glory, perception and insecurity.

Brazilian literature FTW. There, with that little obligation out of the way...


I'm currently reading "Daemon" by Daniel Suarez. It's a really good sci-fi/detective thriller about a guy that uses a computer program (the titular Daemon) to commit crimes after he dies. I heard it's being made into a movie.

I'm currently reading Extra Lives:Why Video Games Matter by Tom Bissell. I think the title speaks for itself. I'd really recommend it to basically anyone on the escapist. I'm also reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison for school. I hate it. With a passion.

Just finished Gone by Michael Grant. It was actually very, very entertaining. Think Lord of the Flies if the kids had superpowers and were in a town. Yeah, it's pretty fucking awesome.

Ghosts of Ascalon was an excellent book and if you are interested in finding out more about the world of Tyria I would recommend buying it.

Edge of Destiny is turning out to be an incredibly painful read and one that I can only get through a few pages of at a time (I usually read a full book in just three or so sittings). Its rather hilarious (in a macabre way) reading AreaNets blog post about the author and how he was the "perfect choice" given how poor of a job it turned out he has done. What makes it worse is that this is (quoting the blog again) "an important book for Guild Wars 2". This is of course because it is the origin story for the main characters of the game, yet it utterly fails to generate any kind of personality for any of them. One character made a small appearance in Ghosts of Ascalon and I would honestly say it gave a better idea of his personality in two or three pages there than throughout the book so far here (I'm two thirds of the way through).

I have a lot more to say about it but I will leave it at that. So my recommendation is to buy the first book as it is an excellent story, but you are probably far better off finding a plot summary for the second one. Its not like you will be missing the finer detail by reading a summary because there isn't any finer detail.

Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke. It's very interesting, although I've stopped for a bit, because I've just ordered a book I really want to read: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, by Harlan Ellison. I hear it's quite the nightmare fuel. I'll have to download the game somewhere on the internet, because getting a physical copy at a reasonable price is almost impossible.

"Curious incident of the case of the dog in the night time" -
Great book about inside the mind of a child with autism.

"Lost Rights" -
It an eye opener haven't gotten much into, its from the Clinton era and its scary to see how things started back then and how worse it is now.

"The origins of Business, Money, and Markets" -

Haven't started reading it yet, but looking forward to it.

"War, Evil, and the end of history"

About the war on terror and gives an interesting perspective on all sides of the argument.
